Simulation is now a tool for designers and developers in order to be able to make reliable statements about the function e.g. B. the engine, the gearbox or the working machine. The simulation model used contains the technological know-how and is an essential part of what is meant by a digital twin. This can by other components such. B. Condition analysis and service life estimates can be expanded to a behavior model that the end customer can also use to monitor and optimize the operating phase. The question now is: How can I offer this additional knowledge to end customers as added value in order to use our devices such as. B. to make the engine or transmission even more attractive.
So the digital twin will be part of the overall package in the future?
Yes. In the future, every real component of a system will have a digital twin. This digital twin can in turn become part of an overall system. And this is exactly the essential core of digitization in industry. We have now arrived in the world of digitization.
“Designers and developers know the connections. The question now is: How can I offer this knowledge as an added value and thus make the devices even more attractive? Brandes clarifies.
What role do the status data of the real drive components play in this context?
A crucial one. Because, of course, the condition data still have to be incorporated into the behavior model of the engine or transmission. To do this, measured values such as vibration, current strength or winding temperature must be recorded. And with the knowledge of the designer and the data that are recorded during operation, the digital twin can provide information about the health status of the engine or transmission, e.g. B. how long its lifespan is expected to be and when the component needs to be replaced. This means that the knowledge of the developer does not remain useless for the end user, but the simulation models created in the design phase create additional added value for the plant manufacturer and later for the end customer. He knows a lot more about the device than before.
Under what conditions can the user use this knowledge in the future?
The system builder needs an engineering tool that offers the possibility of integrating the supplied digital twins of all components into the overall system. At Siemens, we firmly believe that modern engineering tools are capable of processing such digital twins.
The behavior models mentioned above represent black boxes for the plant manufacturer, which give them all relevant information about the condition of the components. The engineering tool can, however, generate a digital twin for an entire system, which makes it possible to intelligently evaluate each individual component in the context of the overall system.
What obstacles do you still see in industry?
It is a hindrance that many still cannot imagine that something like this is possible, what it could look like and what potential a digital twin can develop.
"Many still lack imagination and creativity," Brandes believes.
Are there already real applications?
Yes, we at Siemens as an automation provider in the process industry already master the virtual commissioning of process automation for an entire system. This enables the function of process automation to be discussed and approved with the end customer even before the real process system exists.
An example of a realization from the operating phase are pumps, in which we not only map the behavior, but also record and measure operating states. In this way, impermissible operating conditions can be avoided, such as wear on pump blades due to increased cavitation.
Should an impermissible state occur, the digital twin of the pump can clarify the question of overload and what effects this has on the life cycle.
This is a typical example of how design information from a pump manufacturer can offer benefits for the entire system in the operating phase.
