Video: Multi-channel Online Temperature Recording System On The Car Piston

In order to achieve the legally required emission limits, the combustion process has to be continuously optimized. Techniques used for this, such as common rail technology, place ever increasing demands on the piston. The resulting increase in ignition pressure makes it essential to analyze the load on the piston caused by ignition pressures during operation.
Minimize friction losses
Another important component for effective piston development is the optimization of the lubrication process in the piston. Possible friction losses that arise during the piston stroke can only be prevented by the optimal design of the piston.

In order to guarantee the operational stability and to optimize the lubrication process, it is essential that the temperatures at the piston and their distribution are measured in different load scenarios without restricting the piston itself in its functioning.
The classic method of online temperature detection using a plunger coil and an NTC as a temperature sensor (Essert method) increasingly fails under high loads. Installation is also very time-consuming.
Use at high temperatures
The 8-channel piston telemetry from Manner is an important tool for the development of pistons, the proof of the strength and the optimization of the lubrication process in the piston. What is new, however, is that the piston telemetry can also be used at up to 200 ° C and thus more extensive tests can be carried out. The system records the temperatures online at multiple points at important points in the piston. It works with robust thermocouples that withstand the increasing degree of vibration and are easy to assemble.
An important aspect is the easy calibration. The sensor telemetry amplifier in the piston, which is temperature-resistant up to 200 ° C, scans the temperature measuring points per piston stroke and transfers the measured values to the stationary evaluation unit. The contactless and battery-free transmission technology, in which the measured values are transmitted point by point at bottom dead center, enables the components to be installed very easily. The running time of the system is unlimited due to the inductive and maintenance-free patented sensor telemetry transmission technology. The 8-channel temperature measuring amplifier is extremely compact (21 mm x 12 mm x 5 mm) and weighs only 3 g. Several modules can be cascaded to expand the measuring channels. (jv)
