Injection molding can be used to produce complex, yet inexpensive, lightweight structures. The mechanical properties of these structures can be expanded by continuous fiber reinforcement. The additional integration of functional elements further increases the range of properties of continuous fiber reinforced components. However, the positioning of the functional elements, the cables for energy and signal transmission and the plug contacts in the injection mold is currently a major challenge due to the high pressure and the high temperature during the injection process.
User meeting lightweight construction
We show the most important strategies of lightweight construction
In the TEMAG research project "Thermoplastic continuous fiber-reinforced multi-axial lattice structures", scientists from the ILK and the Institute for Textile Machinery and Textile High-Performance Material Technology (ITM) at the TU Dresden developed an innovative manufacturing process for continuous fiber-reinforced injection molded components with integrated electronic functional elements. The Dresden scientists followed a new approach. They used the high-performance textile grilles as mechanical reinforcement for the injection molded components and developed them further to support the electronic components. This process enables the efficient production of solid, light and intelligent components. The research partners already demonstrated the developed manufacturing process at Composites Europe using the example of a vehicle tailgate. For this purpose, the grille reinforcement was designed and draped according to the load and equipped with a touch sensor, the signal of which can be used to open the tailgate. The scientists have also integrated a brake light. (qui)
