The energy transition requires companies to use energy efficiently and consciously. The Energy Services Act (EDL-G) requires all those who are not small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to monitor their energy consumption and to identify potential for savings and efficiency gains. Since December 5, 2015, they have to demonstrate their efforts with an energy audit according to DIN EN 16247-1 and repeat them every four years at the latest. But SMEs can also be subject to audit as a partner or affiliate. This does not apply to companies that already operate an energy management system in accordance with DIN EN ISO 50001 or EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme).

The audit creates the basis for a resource-saving use of energy. A qualified energy consultant records all systems, systems and processes relevant for consumption in the company, examines the influence of work processes and user behavior on consumption and derives the optimization potential from this. In the final report, measures for savings and recommendations for implementation are listed and economically evaluated, with regard to both the cost savings due to lower consumption and investments that may be useful or even necessary to implement the savings potential. The EDL-G does not require that the measures recommended in the audit are actually implemented. But to actually reduce consumption,the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy creates incentives through funding for the initial certification of an energy management system according to DIN EN ISO 50001. In addition to advice and training, the funding also takes into account investments in measurement technology and software.

Building a measurement infrastructure

Determining and implementing savings options requires that the consumption data can be recorded continuously and as precisely as possible. However, the central measuring point of the suppliers, which is the only basis for recording in many companies, does not reveal how the consumption is made up. Only when it becomes visible what proportion of the respective existing systems and processes, parts of buildings or cost centers in the company can targeted measures for individual consumers or consumer groups be developed and their effectiveness tracked. That is why it is first necessary to set up or expand a measuring point infrastructure that records the consumption of the systems with great detail.

Their installation in existing systems poses a certain challenge: The measuring infrastructure should be installed quickly and inexpensively and, if possible, during operation without having to disconnect and reconnect the lines, and the components should also find space in a tightly dimensioned control cabinet.

Here a measuring solution in a compact design offers itself, as developed by Socomec with Diris Digiware. It can be put together from current sensors, current measuring modules, voltage measuring module and display device, whereby individual modules can be shared to save space. Current sensors are available for pushing through, new and divisible and flexible sensors reduce the retrofitting effort in existing systems. A plug-and-play concept, in which the modules and cables are connected with click locks, avoids connection and installation errors. The measuring accuracy according to IEC 61557-12 is at class 0.5 for the entire measuring chain at 2% to 120% of the primary current and at class 0.2 for the measuring device alone.

Provide and evaluate data

So that the data from the individual measuring points can be used for later evaluation and analysis, they must be collected and combined. The Socomec solution makes this possible via the Diris G bus coupler. It collects and centralizes the data from wireless meters and measuring devices connected via RS485 Modbus, including for media such as gas and water, and makes them available via Modbus TCP via the Ethernet. An integrated web server archives the consumption data and monitors the electrical values ​​in real time. In the last step, the data is transferred to the energy management software for further processing. For this purpose, the Vertelis Hyperview solution offers many analysis and evaluation functions that can be carried out with an intuitive user console.

The consumption data can be used to identify the largest consumers, determine consumption peaks and trends and isolate the factors that influence consumption. The evaluation can take place, for example, according to the media, the use of energy, locations, buildings or cost centers. (sh)
