A cellar, a traditional place for the storage of coal and potatoes, was transformed into a bright, friendly bathroom and leisure area. Christine Breitkopf Three, two, one: yours! It can be that quick with the order acquisition if the craftsman recognizes his opportunities and uses them. How it all started: Desired, bought. A whirlpool should be in the bathroom when the 205-year-old half-timbered house is completely expanded. After delivery, the Thum family and Master Wieland were at a loss in front of the object of desire. This whirlpool certainly didn't fit into the existing bathroom. Wolfgang Wieland, responsible for the expansion and painting work, had the idea: remodeling the cellar! So far completely unused due to damp walls, living space could arise here. The builder was thrilled. The entire building was renovated and the basement,in a completely desolate, unusable condition, had not previously been planned as living space. This idea addressed a long-cherished wish of the Thum family, namely a wellness and fitness area that was completely independent of the living space. It wasn't that easy, as the question arose at the beginning of how to treat the damp, open sandstone walls. On closer inspection, mold was also found. For the conversion of the basement into a bathing temple, a room climate had to be created, which on the one hand kept the moisture in the outer walls out and on the other hand reliably transported the moisture generated in the future wellness area to the outside. After some research, the ideal material for the expansion was found. The solution came from the specialist, the company Epasit:The Epatherm indoor climate panels. The panels are made from natural raw materials, are environmentally friendly, sound and heat insulating and ultimately also non-flammable. They can also absorb moisture to a high degree and then release it again. This "buffer effect" prevents mold growth in the interior. The material can be processed by the painter or by the plasterer. Epatherm panels are ideally suited for the conversion of basements because, due to the properties mentioned, they offer protection against the ingress of moisture and thus guarantee a healthy and pleasant indoor climate. Climate control is particularly important in a damp room. Excess moisture in the room air is absorbed in the pores of the climate panels, evenly distributed and only then released again, when the indoor climate has normalized overall. This keeps the surface of the boards dry and therefore mold-free. Pretreatment of the original basement walls was not necessary. While the climate panels could be quickly attached to the flat walls, the arched walls and the embrasure-like windows of the listed vaulted cellar presented the expansion specialist Wieland with a great challenge. The reconstruction of the window reveals required precise puzzle work, which was easy to solve with a little patience with the easy-to-work climate plates. After about two months, the basement walls were ready. After attaching the climate panels, it was quick, because they could be processed immediately - whether with paint, wallpaper, tiles or plaster. In the basement of the old half-timbered house, the decision was made to use a special, breathable plaster. After his order, the realization of the wellness landscape could begin immediately. That was in 2002. Today, five years after the renovation, the usable space gained has been permanently protected from moisture and has become a fully-fledged living space. The use of climate plates also saves energy when heating. The Thum family is very satisfied with "their cellar". So it was worth it. The new space now not only has space for the new leisure area, but also for the storage of potatoes and other food. There is also space for all the house technology. The plasterer had the idea of converting a damp basement into a sports and wellness area. The customer was thrilled and the result is absolutely convincing.
