“Industrial security and IT security can no longer be separated from one another these days. For this reason, TÜV Nord has developed the comprehensive "Security4Safety" service. This also includes a "cyber risk analysis", with which the cyber risks of an installation are identified and appropriate measures are derived.
IT security and safety are interrelated
"Measures in the area of IT security can sometimes also implement safety requirements more cost-effectively," summarizes Baum. If corresponding steps are then implemented, TÜViT can carry out penetration tests at the various levels of automation technology - i.e. try to hack the systems. In this context one speaks of 'good hackers'. In this way, weaknesses caused by missing or inadequate security measures could be identified and remedied.
Industrial companies would also have a growing need for functionally safe automation components. "When developing industrial electronics, Mesco takes the requirements of functional safety into account by applying the international standard IEC 61508 and cooperates with TÜV Nord in the areas of security and certification," explains Peter Bernhardt, Head of Sales and Marketing at Mesco Engineering. Mesco generally relies on the use of design packages as a modular technology platform. In this way, products could be developed more quickly and cost-effectively, and the certification effort was significantly reduced in cooperation with TÜV Nord. (jv)
