Video: QUESTION OF THE MONTH. How To Process Radiator Paint Correctly?

On cold days, radiators are actually not given much attention. But what does a radiator look like after years of use? How should damage such as rust spots be dealt with when re-coating?
The best time to apply radiator paint
If so, it's time for a renovation. A good date for this is spring. Because after the end of the heating season, the new coat of radiator paint is best implemented. If the paint was applied to warm or even hot radiators, it would not be possible to apply it optimally.
Preparation of the radiator
First of all, careful preparation of the paintwork is an essential step. It is important to determine what type of coating is present. For example, it could be the first powder coating applied at the factory. The radiators are to be cleaned and freed from loose paint, rust and other separating substances. Furthermore, the surfaces are sanded and rust is removed as far as possible. Once the preparatory work has been completed, the coating consisting of a primer can be started, depending on the requirement, with an anti-rust paint or a universal primer.
Paint the radiator correctly
Once the primer has dried and if necessary roughened, the painting follows. A suitable product should be used for this; Radiator paints are available both solvent-based and water-dilutable. Since an odor nuisance is usually not tolerated indoors, an aqua version should be used. Of course, the right tool - brush, roller or sprayer - must also be used to apply the coating to the special components. The approach and the well implemented details make a successful radiator renovation in the end. The sharp edges in particular are a challenge when applying the liquid coating materials. Modern radiator paints are therefore well covering and therefore also offer secure edge coverage. They also have the necessary, application-specific properties, are heat-resistant, color-stable, low-odor and quick-drying. If possible, disassemble the radiator for revision. The color application with the resulting freedom of work is further improved.
Reworking radiators is a time-consuming renovation measure. If the damage to the elements is massive, it can be worth replacing them completely. Leaky radiators must be replaced anyway.
