This shepherd's wagon, which stands firmly on eight prefabricated concrete foundations, is an original eye-catcher in the garden. You can save money on the replica if you are the owner of a stationary planer and thicknessing machine or you know it well. Because if you buy rough sawn wood for the construction timber instead of expensive planed goods and bring it into shape and size yourself, you will get up to 60% cheaper. If the garden shed is to survive, protect its components against the weather - before assembly. Use waterproof wood glue for the connections. After cutting and breaking the cut edges, apply a primer with blue stain protection in preparation for the subsequent surface treatment with glaze.

Build a shepherd's wagon yourself: construction is simple

Tool checklist

  • Cordless screwdriver
  • drilling machine
  • Orbital sander
  • Miter saw
  • circular saw
  • Router
  • Jigsaw

The construction is simple: the longitudinal and transverse walls stand on a floor construction made of a frame with longitudinal beams inside. This rests on crossbeams, which in turn are anchored in column shoes on point foundations. The connections of the truss are made with wooden dowels. Always drill into the end grain first. This is because the drill can run. If you transfer the hole positions to the opposite surface with marker tips, also known as dowel fixes. Outside, screws replace the wooden dowels. Drill the holes - into the joist to be connected. To prevent water from penetrating, cover the countersunk screw heads with so-called cone plates. When the walls are finished, the curved roof racks and the fillingsfor which you partially make mold templates. After cutting, break the edges there too with the sanding block. How to cut the notches of the longitudinal beams into the roof racks: First cut the two parallels up to the transverse line using the jigsaw. Then cut a flat curve from the outside right to the left inside corner and along the cross line to the right inside corner.

Roughly grind the fillings. Also prime and sand in between. The outside is glazed in color. The door leaves - also made of blockboard - are treated like the fillings. The hinged door is better if you also attach the long parts of the hangers (these are the door hinges) on the inside. The decorative element on the outside is tacked or nailed. Number the positions of the truss compartments and the fillings so that each plate fits exactly later. And if the car is to move on wheels differently than our model, we recommend the lighter 32 mm Lightwood balsa plate instead of the 25 mm block board, which still weighs 11.2 kg / m2 Weighs 5.7 kg / m2. At 53 euros / m2, however, this is more expensive than the other, with a price per square meter of just 18 euros.

We continue with the shepherd's wagon- Verandandaänder: Each of its rungs (including their cut edges break after cutting) is anchored at the top and bottom with two dowels. To drill the holes, an improvised depth stop made of a residual wood that is suitable in length is useful. To transfer the dowel holes from the end grain to the lower and upper crossbar, it is best to build a stop bracket. With its help and with that of a short rung piece, the transfer can be done easily and quickly. Pay attention to perpendicularity when gluing! The window consists of a frame and sash that holds the glass pane in grooves. The window cross made of strips is placed on the outside. Before putting the window sash in the frame, prime both. Then paint with door and window glaze. We chose Meranti as the color. Before you start assembling in the garden, glaze the floor structure, the truss elements and also the other external parts such as the outer retaining strips for the fillings or the roof rack above the veranda.

Mix the concrete with which you anchor the support shoes in the finished foundations according to the package information and fill it into the hollow body. Then insert the shoe anchors. To prevent them from sinking into the concrete, support them with two pieces of ledge left on the foundation. To position the foundations, align the floor construction at the intended location on the floor. Mark the eight foundation points on the floor. Attention: set the foundation under the porch 10 cm higher, since it does not carry a cross but the central longitudinal beam. Even if the support shoes are adjustable, you should place the foundations precisely in height and lateral alignment. When the floor construction is screwed horizontally into the support shoes, place a longitudinal and the front end wall on it. Fix them to each other with clamps and screw them onto the floor beams and with each other. You should pre-drill the holes.

Pouring the foundation of the garden

A point foundation is required if a pile is to be securely anchored to the ground

Also screw the roof racks through pre-drilled holes, in the notches of which you insert the roof strips protruding at the front and rear (you should dimension them sufficiently so that they can be adjusted afterwards to the overhang of the roof plates). Before inserting the fillings, put acrylic in the corner of the inner retaining strip. Place the plate in the compartment and also seal it from the outside with acrylic. Now attach the outer panels. The corrugated balcony floorboards and the tongue-and-groove floorboards, both made of Siberian larch, do not quickly become patina if you coat them with garden parquet glaze all around before laying them. What is important is the all-round 8 mm groove on the inside of the walls, which you can best get with spacers.

Simple and inexpensive: Even beginners can build the pavilion

The roof panels are made of zinc-colored corrugated polyester. They measure 300 x 90 cm. Place the first one flush with the back of the roof construction and fix it in the rear area with the screws, seals and spacers that go with it, before pushing in the next plate two shafts wide. We pushed the last plate in front only one shaft wide and then did not need to cut it further on the front. Screw the verge boards cut out using the template for the roof racks to the front of the roof moldings. Finally, mount the eaves boards between them, which are also screwed to the roof panels. The sliding door to the porch is led out in a notch in the last floor board. Otherwise mount it as described in the instructions for the sliding door fitting. How the stairs and canopy are built can be found in the construction plan. The interior of the car is lined with tongue-in-cheek tongue and groove boards up to the height of the window sill. The infills are simply papered.
