Video: Nice And Smooth

What is already standard in many countries is becoming more and more popular in Germany. The desire for absolutely smooth wall surfaces. It is increasingly desired to have structureless coatings on smoothed walls. The natural rolling structure of the paint, which had been accepted until then, is now often undesirable and poses a special challenge for the craftsman. Rudolf Kolb, Caparol In many southern European countries and, for example, China, too, textured surfaces have become standard. What we consider a challenge is apparently easily solved elsewhere. A closer look reveals the reasons for this, because the coating processes and products used there differ enormously from those here. In the Middle Kingdom, for example, it is common practice for wall paints to be diluted with water up to 60 percent or to be supplied directly by the manufacturer in a watery thin consistency. These "glazing liquids" are brought to the wall with a fine brush in several steps until a covering surface is obtained. This often requires up to six work steps and more. The result is a structure-free and smooth, but also highly sensitive surface. In other countries, the interior paints are loaded with a solvent, which has a positive effect on the color gradient and the open time when applying. Measured in terms of wage costs, the application method customary in China for Germany would be inconceivable. The use of solvents in our interior paints is also no longer up to date. So new paths have to be found in order to find affordable solutions for the modern trend in line with a positive environmental awareness. Spray paint is an efficient way to achieve textured surfaces. However, the method cannot always be used and usually requires a higher set-up and covering effort. An emission-minimized and solvent-free interior wall paint with a varnish-like gradient and a dull matt surface would be considered the ideal solution for the German market. A dispersion paint with a special flow and low material content is the result of extensive development and combines all of these properties. The modern paint was specially developed for use on smooth surfaces in a roller application and enables a particularly fine and textured surface that cannot be compared with conventional wall paints. But color alone is no guarantee of a perfect result. Similar to the coating, the tool, the substrate preparation and the application technology must also be adapted to the special requirements. Based on these findings and numerous tests, three different systems for producing smooth walls were developed. The "Classic", "Exclusive" and "Premium" systems consist of a smooth filler, if necessary non-woven bonding, top coat and the special roller. They differ from each other essentially in the materials used and represent different end results in the value and structural fineness of their surfaces. While the Classic system is based on conventional products and leaves a light but recognizable rolling structure, the Exclusive system has a much finer and more uniform structure due to the use of special materials. The varnish-like course in combination with the matt surface depicts the premium system, but also requires greater care in production. The costs for the materials in the Premium system are also slightly higher than for classic products. But that pays off in view of the achievable results. Depending on the customer's requirements and willingness to invest, the three systems can be used to produce smooth surfaces with different values. Similar to elaborate creative techniques or when gluing high-quality wallpapers, the production of the surfaces in the smooth wall system demands a high level of pretreatment and processing of individual components. The following points describe what is important in the production of smooth walls and what needs to be considered. Preliminary work Accurate and careful preparation of the surface is extremely important with these systems and has a significant influence on the end result. Flaws and bumps that are not removed during the preparatory work have a brutal effect on the later appearance of the smooth surface. To make matters worse, that subsequent, partial repairs of defects are not possible without optical restrictions. As a rule, the entire wall must then be reworked. This can be expensive and leads to a delay in the completion of the work. It is therefore all the more important to pay special attention to the preparation of the substrate from the outset. In the new building, plasters and fillers on gypsum boards can be produced in different quality levels. At least surface quality Q3 is required to use smooth wall systems on drywall surfaces. The execution of quality level 4 offers additional security and is highly recommended. For gypsum plasters, quality level 4 (Q4 - smoothed) is the minimum requirement for the substrate. The execution of this surface quality providesthat in addition to the actual plaster application and smoothing, a full-surface reworking of the plaster is carried out with a fine filler. Pasty, ready-to-use fillers are ideal for this work step. These fillers can also be used in renovation work. For example, when it comes to flatness leveling on structural plasters and old coatings. Here, the spatula application is carried out based on the Q4 operation. The surfaces prepared in this way are sanded or felted using the dust-free process and then primed. Fleece bonding Wall coverings such as cellulose or glass fleeces offer enormous advantages as a substrate when producing smooth paint surfaces. Accurately filled walls can be directly painted over with a watery deep primer after careful priming, but it can be sensible and in some cases also necessary to apply a fleece as a pre-treatment. High-quality wall coverings are optimally matched to subsequent coats in terms of their ability to absorb and paint, they offer a slightly delayed and even absorbency for subsequent coats. This property is very important in order to achieve a uniform structure of the surface and to largely avoid disruptive rolling approaches. The fleece can also span minor irregularities in the subsurface and prevent hairline cracks. Due to the manufacturing process, even smooth nonwovens have a light structure, which, on closer inspection, becomes visible as a kind of orange peel. This has a disadvantageous effect in order to achieve the smoothest possible surface. A much better solution here is a highly coated special fleece with a satin-finished and structure-free surface. In the exclusive and premium smooth wall systems, this wall covering is intended as a base. In addition to the smooth surface, it offers a much longer open time for subsequent coatings and thus enables a more productive application of paint, which in turn has a positive effect on the roll structure. When wallpapering, make sure that no dirt gets into the adhesive and on the wall surfaces. Even the smallest grains of sand will show up later and affect the overall look. Therefore always materials, tools,Keep the surface and surroundings clean. Edges on outside corners Be it on window reveals or other parts of the room, when gluing wall coverings, you inevitably also have to deal with outside corners. Here the user is faced with the challenge of creating an absolutely clean and exact edge. Almost impossible with conventional methods. The wallpaper corner angles specially developed for this purpose offer the solution. Before carrying out the filler work, the profiles are glued vertically to the corners with contact adhesive and later adjusted to the surrounding surfaces with the filler. For subsequent wallpapering work, only the straight cut edge of the wall covering has to be glued along the corner edge of the profile. The external corners produced in this way can be formed absolutely precisely and also offer greater protection against impact loads. Painting work Before starting painting, the surface must be examined for possible flaws. Scattered grains of sand that press through the fleece from the surface can be carefully straightened with a small hammer. In the next step, adjacent surfaces should be carefully taped off. When cutting with the brush at a later time, it is advisable to roll the spots down to the outermost edges. This is the only way to achieve a uniform surface later. Otherwise, the brush structure of the trimming areas could show up in gloss and structure in relation to the rolled surfaces. The color must be kept clean. Possible contamination or dried-on material residues must be screened out. Ideally, the application should take place in a team of three employees. One carries out the trimming work, while another places the material on the roller and distributes it evenly. The third in the group is responsible for rolling the areas. As soon as the applied color is lightly drawn, it is rolled up evenly with a special ink roller with a fine, dense pile structure. The roller is allowed to slide over the surface without applying pressure. In this way the rolling structure is significantly flattened. With the thin-layer emulsion paint, there is then a fine flow of the still wet paint, as a result of which the remaining structure additionally shrinks. With this procedure, extremely fine and smooth wall surfaces can be produced.

With "Caparol Smooth Wall", Caparol has developed three systems for smooth walls. All three systems consist of a filler, a fleece and a coating. “PremiumFine”, a special top coating that has a particularly good flow, was developed for particularly high demands. With the “FeinRoller”, Caparol also offers a special ink roller that has a particularly dense and fine pile. Further information on the systems is available at www.caparol.de
