Video: Thermoplastic Lightweight Compounds With Carbon Fibers

These enable additional weight savings through the use of light carbon fibers and exceptional mechanical properties. The weight reduction is up to 62% compared to other reinforced thermoplastics if the design options are fully used. Furthermore, the bending strength could be increased up to 530 MPa and the tensile modulus of elasticity reached 52 GPa. This is made possible by the additives in the polymers used and the addition of special carbon and glass fibers.
With these properties, the materials also offer advantages over other material classes, such as composite materials (CFRP and GFRP) and organic sheets. In addition, compounds of this material class are also designed for use in the field of vision. With the appropriate design of the components and using the design freedom that is possible with plastics, a significant reduction in system costs of up to 70% can also be achieved. The new product range is marketed under the name Luvocom LW. Lehmann & Voss also focuses on tailor-made solutions for these products. A suitable material development takes place depending on the component requirements. The integration of further functionalities, such as tribological properties or electromagnetic shielding, is possible. (qui)

Carbon Fibers From Algae Oil Enable New Construction Materials

In combination with granite or other hard stones, carbon fibers make completely new construction materials and building materials possible. If the carbon fibers are made from algae oil, the production of the atmosphere removes more carbon dioxide than is released. A research project by the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is now to advance these technologies
