What are the benefits of sustainable design?

The software takes into account four key environmental indicators - CO 2 balance, total energy consumption, effects on air and water - to help you implement eco-design processes. This allows you to benefit from 'green' marketing opportunities by adapting existing designs and optimizing new products in terms of sustainability in order to produce next generation, environmentally friendly products for every industry.

Does sustainable construction start with the designer and end with the market launch?

Sustainable construction requires life cycle assessment, a collection of scientific methods for measuring the environmental impact over the entire product life cycle, from raw material extraction through manufacturing, assembly, transport and product use to disposal and recycling. If the life cycle assessment was previously only carried out in the last phases of product development, Solidworks Sustainability now integrates the life cycle assessment at the screening level into the design phase, in which adjustments are still easily possible to create more sustainable designs.

You offer your users the Sustainability solution, which is now integrated directly into Solidworks. How does sustainability support sustainable construction?

Solidworks Sustainability determines the life cycle assessment of a product over its entire service life, which is assessed on the basis of the factors already mentioned: the CO 2 balance, the effects on air and water, and the total energy consumption. From raw material mining through manufacturing to the use and disposal of the product, the software shows the influence of the selected materials on the environment. The revolutionary thing about Solidworks technology is that this evaluation takes place integrated in the development process and the user in the familiar CAD environment can continue to work.

How are the sustainability data generated?

Thanks to a partnership with the pioneering LCA company PE International, Solidworks Sustainability uses the extensive Gabi lifecycle database. This database, which is based on scientific knowledge and empirical data collected over decades, is the worldwide gold standard for data on environmental compatibility. The information is therefore always updated to the latest status.

What changes for the designer if he wants to use sustainability again?

In principle, nothing: Since sustainability is an integral part of the Solidworks product development solution, the environmental impact assessment becomes an effortless, self-evident part of the workflow. You can select different materials and manufacturing processes and then immediately analyze the environmental impact of materials, procurement, transportation and manufacturing.

What about the documentation of sustainability?

You receive meaningful results on environmental compatibility, which are created and visualized in real time. The sustainability information is stored in the model file so that it can be shared with and used by other users in real time. Cooperation is encouraged and everyone is always up to date. Furthermore, automatically generated reports are available, which enable an effective comparison of variants and with which well-founded company decisions can be made with regard to sustainable product development.
