Schurter's new technology, Metal over Cap (MoC), is intended to be an ideal solution for durable and robust buttons and keyboards without moving mechanical parts. MoC technology means that mounted behind a metal overlay, there is a capacitive sensor system. This solution is comparable to the current touchscreen technology behind glass, which is particularly well-known from smartphones and tablet PCs. However, MoC does not use glass but a printed metal plate as the front material. A slight actuation by light pressure with a finger on a MoC keypad should cause a change in capacitance in the sensors installed behind it. This change is evaluated electronically and forwarded to the controller or the computer via an interface. According to Schurter, this is a good alternative to the piezo switch.

The switch panel is designed for use in harsh environments and can be equipped with stainless steel or aluminum front panels. The individual graphic surface design takes place in the screen printing process with an additional protective coating. The sensor electronics with all common interfaces are mounted on the back of a rigid circuit board. According to Schurter, MoC technology is robust against vibrations and enables use in an extended temperature range from –40 ° C to 85 ° C.

Possible uses of MoC technology can be found, for example, in building and security technology as well as in transportation and construction machinery. (sh)
