Video: ABB On The Steering Committee Of The Industrial Internet Consortium

ABB has been elected to the Industrial Internet Consortium IIC Steering Committee. The IIC and the Industry 4.0 platform are global initiatives that want to contribute core elements to the ABB concept of the Internet of Things, Services and People. Eric Harper, who will represent ABB on the Steering Committee, is a senior researcher with a focus on software architecture and sustainable technologies at ABB's corporate research center in the United States. As a global, non-profit consortium of companies, the IIC pursues the goal of accelerating the growth of the Industrial Internet, for example by determining and promoting best practices and global standards.
“Networking is the engine of the fourth industrial revolution”
"We consider it a great honor and privilege that Eric has been elected by his peers as an industry representative to the steering committee," said Bazmi Husain, chief technology officer at ABB. “The networking of manufacturing, intelligent products and services with competent specialists is the engine of the fourth industrial revolution. This creates opportunities for cost reductions, energy savings, efficiency gains and opens up increased social added value. Our concept of the Internet of Things, Services and People is part of this development.” The IIC wants to put such a vision into practice by promoting developments and defining global standards.
It is the responsibility of the IIC Steering Committee to determine the general priorities of the consortium, to guide its direction, to monitor finances, to approve test fields, to define and manage guidelines and procedures, and to perform other tasks as required. The steering committee comprises four permanent seats for founding members and the Executive Director Dr. Richard Soley, five contributing members, and four other representatives, who are selected each year from the ranks of large industry members, smaller companies, and academic institutions or nonprofit organizations.
Don't lose sight of occupational safety, cyber security and data protection
"We look forward to the special perspective and knowledge that Eric Harper and ABB, as a global technology company, will bring to the IIC Steering Committee," said Dr. Richard Soley, Executive Director of the IIC. "ABB can help drive the growth of the Industrial Internet." ABB is helping to build the Internet of Things, Services and People by helping its customers evolve their existing technologies while keeping an eye on occupational safety, cybersecurity and data protection.
The Industrial Internet Consortium is an open membership organization that includes around 250 members from 30 countries. The IIC was founded to accelerate the development, introduction and widespread use of the networking of machines, intelligent analysis and humans. AT&T, Cisco, General Electric, IBM and Intel founded the IIC in March 2014 and promote and coordinate the primary goals and basic technologies of the industrial Internet. (kj)
