"The demand for service robots is facing a historic breakthrough," said Joe Gemma, president of the International Federation of Robotics (IFR). “In addition to the already established business with professional service robots, the consumer segment is stepping up - from household robots to technical entertainers. Overall, the growth forecasts for privately used and also professional service robots are excellent."

Professional service robots

In the business with professional service robots, medical robots are ahead of agricultural robots and logistics robots in terms of sales value. Great growth dynamics are to be expected in all three top segments in the forecast period 2016 to 2019: In the medical segment with the large areas of application in diagnosis, operation assistance and rehabilitation, the sales value is expected to increase to $ 7.2 billion. In agriculture - above all the milking robots - an increase of $ 5.7 billion is expected.

For logistics systems, which have a large share of Automated Guided Vehicels (AGV), sales are expected to increase to $ 5.3 billion. The demand in logistics has already developed enormously from 2014 to 2015. The number of units sold rose by 50 percent to 19,000 units. Sales rose 52 percent over the same period to $ 779 million. Interesting with a focus on the manufacturers: 81 percent of the logistic systems are produced in the USA - only 11 percent in Asia and 8 percent in Europe. The overall forecast for all professional service robots taken together is positive: The sale of the approximately 333,000 new units is expected to increase to a total of $ 23 billion from 2016 to 2019.

Private service robots

A comparable sales value is emerging for the business with private service robots. The approximately 42 million forecast units are expected to generate around USD 22 billion (from 2016 to 2019). Broken down by areas of application, the household robots form the largest segment in terms of both the number of units sold and their market value. In 2015, 3.7 million of this type were sold (vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers, window cleaners) - an increase of 11 percent compared to the previous year.

The current calendar year to 2019 promises a sales boom to around 31 million units sold. Revenue climbed to $ 13 billion during this period. The business with entertainment robots is also developing strongly. From 2014 to 2015 there was a 29 percent jump in units sold to around 1.7 million units. Toy and hobby robots in particular are very popular with consumers. The entire segment is forecast to increase to a total of 11 million units by 2019. Until then, the sales value would have totaled around $ 9 billion.

Outlook - How the start-up scene is developing

Service robotics is currently dominated by European (43 percent) and North American manufacturers (37 percent). Almost 20 percent come from Asia. Interesting in this comparatively new market segment is the question of how the start-up scene is developing. In the roughly 620 companies surveyed, the USA is ahead with almost 10 percent of all startups. (kj)
