Video: Plastic Energy Chain According To Hygienic Design Guidelines

Machine components for the food industry not only have to be safe to operate and avoid product contamination by lubricant-free solutions, they also have to be easy and quick to clean. The so-called "hygienic design" to avoid constructive weak points on machines and systems is therefore becoming increasingly important. For this reason, Igus developed the first e-chain according to the hygienic design guidelines. "The new energy chain is very easy to clean, as there are no dead spaces in which germs or dirt can get stuck," explains Lars Braun, head of industry management for the packaging industry at Igus. "The blue material typical of plastic elements in the food industry is FDA-compliant and also has good resistance to cleaning agents and chemicals."

Development according to customer requirements
Like many new products, the e-chain was created every year according to hygienic design guidelines based on special market and customer requirements. The "driver" of this idea was, among others, the company Multivac from Wolfertschwenden, which is considered the specialist for packaging machines in the industry. Multivac turned to Igus at a time when the market was asking for solutions. With the Multivac request for a hygienically designed energy supply system, the starting signal for product development followed, followed by joint tests. The focus was on the requirement for easy cleaning, an open design, radii and curves that avoid dead spaces and a construction that avoids superimposed surfaces. The E-chain will be available in two different inner heights and five different inner widths.The up to five fixed interior segments for individual filling are available for both chain sizes and are intended to enable cables and hoses to be laid cleanly separately from one another in order to offer sufficient space for cleaning. At this year's Fachpack, Igus presented the new e-chain on the R 081 thermoforming packaging machine from Multivac.
