Video: The Catamaran Of The Future Combines The Advantages Of Single And Multihull Boats

Linear guidance Safe, upright sailing, unsinkability and a high level of sailing comfort are decisive advantages of double hull boats. The stability of the boats is made possible by the optimal distribution of the weight over two so-called swimmers. However, the breadth also entails considerable costs. Two berths have to be occupied and the crane lifting of the boats is also complex and expensive.
In order to avoid these disadvantages and save costs, Futura Yacht Systems GmbH developed the first wide variable deep sea catamaran. The width can be reduced from up to eight meters to 4.85 meters. This is done by retracting the two floats using a sliding mechanism. This means that only one berth can be used without any problems. It also makes crane and truck transportation easier. In addition, the individual parts can be manufactured modularly, similar to the automotive industry. Overall, this saves considerable costs.
Innovation thanks to lubrication and maintenance-free Igus components
Various maintenance-free products from the motion plastics specialist Igus are used in the sliding mechanism of the float. Because especially in the maritime environment, the high-performance plastics developed for movement show their strengths due to their freedom from corrosion and lubricants. In the rear part of the catamaran, two Igus E-chains of the E4 series are installed transversely inside the ship and ensure that the cables are routed safely when the boat is pushed together. In addition, there are a total of eight Drylin linear guides on the bow and stern. These are also located across the ship under the cabin. The light guides enable the floats to extend safely and stably, thereby contributing to the trouble-free functioning of the mechanism. (ud)
