Video: Companies Adopt Standard For IIoT Applications
A group of companies wants to advance OPC UA over Time Sensitive Networking, TSN for short, as the uniform communication solution between industrial controls and the cloud. This solution, based on open standards, enables devices from different manufacturers to be fully compatible with one another in industrial applications. At this year's SPS IPC Drives the companies ABB, Bosch Rexroth, B&R, Cisco, General Electric, Kuka, National Instruments (NI), Parker Hannifin, Schneider Electric, SEW Eurodrive and TTTech announced their cooperation. They aim to support OPC UA TSN in future product generations.

Open and uniform IIoT solution for communication
So far, various protocols have been used for communication between devices in industrial automation, which are not compatible with each other. Customers are so often trapped in proprietary systems. To support the different protocol worlds, product manufacturers must develop multiple versions of fundamentally the same products. Under these conditions, developments and automation concepts can only be implemented to a limited extent. For customers, this means that they cannot exploit the full potential of their automation solutions.

To solve this problem, the companies have established technical cooperation within the Industrial Internet Consortium and the OPC Foundation. The partner companies are striving for a completely open, uniform, compatible IIoT solution for real-time peer-to-peer communication. This enables controllers to exchange data with each other and with the cloud in a standardized manner. The companies see OPC UA TSN as the future standard for industrial automation and IIoT connectivity.
Unify communication in industrial automation
OPC UA TSN is the combination of the OPC UA protocol extended by publisher / subscriber (pub / sub) and the IEEE TSN Ethernet standard. OPC UA TSN provides all the necessary components to standardize communication in industrial automation. This enables information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) to grow together. This creates important basic requirements for the Industrial Internet of Things and Industry 4.0.

The companies strive to support OPC UA TSN in the coming generations of their products. The first prototypes are already being integrated into a test bed at the IIC. The testbed is intended to show that it is possible with OPC UA TSN to ensure communication between controllers from different manufacturers via a common IT infrastructure. Other companies that share the common vision of uniform communication between controllers as well as controllers and the cloud are welcome to join the cooperation. (kj)

With the new Visor V20 standard, Sensopart rounds off its portfolio of vision sensors with code reading function. So far, the high image resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels was only available in the Advanced and Professional series, with additional functions such as OCR and object recognition. If you do not need this, the better performance is now also available in the more cost-effective standard version
B & R sees the potential in OPC UA TSN to create a uniform communication standard for current and future IIoT applications. For this reason, the automation specialist is driving the expansion of OPC UA by Pub / / Sub and the combination of OPC UA with Ethernet TSN. We spoke to Sebastian Sachse, Technology Manager Open Automation at B & R, about the advantages for OPC UA for machine builders and operators
