Video: Variety Of Materials In Energy Supply Systems - The Application Determines The Material
Whether steel, hybrid or plastic - in the case of cable carriers from Tsubaki Kabelschlepp, the customer's application determines the material. With a range of standard and special materials, the company can supply the right system that meets the requirements of the respective area of application. Energy supply chains from Tsubaki Kabelschlepp are used in machine tools, crane systems, car washes or in medical and laboratory technology; however, they are also suitable for complex applications, for example in industrial robots, on offshore oil drilling platforms or in space travel. The company also offers reliable systems for applications with high or low temperatures, such as in steel mills or cold stores.
Plastic chains - light and stable at the same time
Cable carriers made of plastic are characterized, among other things, by their comparatively low weight and are at the same time stable and reliable. The material also enables different options for quick line assignment. The user can choose from many different dimensions. Because they are also available in particularly compact designs, they are also suitable for applications with limited installation space. For example, in the platform lifts of an Italian manufacturer, with the help of which wheelchair users or people with reduced mobility can climb stairs or a series of steps. Micro energy guides with fixed brackets are used here. Due to the all-plastic design, these energy guides are particularly light and flexible, but at the same time stable and quick and easy to install.Due to their compact design, they are also suitable for tight installation conditions, such as those found on platform lifts.

Hybrid chains - powerful material combination
For higher demands on stability and service life, energy chains in a hybrid version are suitable. The chain straps are made of steel or plastic, but the cables are routed using an aluminum web system. This combination of materials should offer several advantages: The webs can be opened in the inner and outer radius, so the inserted cables are easily accessible. Aluminum webs can be cut to length in a 1 mm grid and thus increase the width variability of the energy chain. In addition, the rigidity of aluminum webs is higher than that of comparable plastic webs - this means that large chain widths can be achieved without the need for additional chain bands.Last but not least, aluminum with the usual sheath materials for electrical cables and hoses forms a more economical pairing of sliding elements than glass-fiber reinforced plastic. The use of aluminum bars reduces cable abrasion and increases the service life of the cables.
Special plastics for special applications
Standard plastic energy chains have proven themselves in a temperature range from –30 ° C to over 100 ° C and in some cases far beyond, even in applications with difficult environmental influences. For some special applications, however, there are specifications that can only be met with special plastics. These include low-temperature applications, for example in high-bay warehouses, but also applications with very high temperatures, for example in paper machines, which also have a very high level of humidity on the chains. Fire protection requirements, in turn, are met by plastic energy chains that contain flame retardant components.Closed chains with lids made of modified plastic are suitable for machine tool construction - glowing chips cannot penetrate the energy chain or damage it or the cables.
For potentially explosive environments, for example in the chemical industry, Tsubaki Kabelschlepp produces tailor-made Ex solutions - the all-plastic, hybrid and steel chains meet the requirements of the Atex directive with <106 Ω. In the manufacture of semiconductors, special ESD energy supply systems with carbon tubes based on nanotechnology have proven themselves, which meet the requirements of the ESD standard with regard to conductivity and resistance behavior. For endangered areas of fire protection, the company offers systems made of special UL94-listed materials with which V0 versions are also possible.

Energy chains with sliding shoes
The use of special materials can also make sense for standard applications. An example of this are chains that are used for long travels. In this case, the chain slides on one another, which inevitably leads to wear on the contact surfaces. In order to increase the service life of these systems, Tsubaki Kabelschlepp uses sliding shoes on the sliding surfaces, which are made from a specially highly abrasion-resistant plastic. The plastic contains additives that not only minimize abrasion even under difficult environmental conditions, but also ensure a minimal sliding friction factor and thus low tensile forces for the movement of the chain. If the shoes are worn, they will be replaced.Without using these sliding elements, the chain straps or even the entire chain would have to be replaced. With a set of inexpensive glide shoes, a lifespan of up to 150,000 kilometers can be achieved.
