An interdisciplinary collaborative project, which is funded by the German Research Foundation for three years with 1.4 million euros, is now investigating how to deal with knowledge in the technical sciences from the idea to transfer to business.

Development of a model for knowledge generation

Various case studies will shed light on the basics of knowledge creation in technology from the humanities, social and economic sciences perspective and provide insights for the development of a model for generating knowledge in technology and its integration in industry and society. The project officially started in July 2016. Sabine Ammon from the Department of Work Science / Technology and Participation at the TU Berlin.

In six sub-projects, two of which are associated, several departments at the TU Berlin want to research the dynamics of knowledge in technical science on an interdisciplinary basis, develop models, clarify key concepts of knowledge and develop an understanding of the dynamics of knowledge networks.

At the same time, they focused on the goal of becoming the nucleus for the collaboration between humanities, social and engineering research at the Berlin location: in addition to the field of work theory / technology and participation, the fields of entrepreneurship and innovation management, technology history, construction of Machine systems, industrial information technology and materials technology involved.

Inventions, machine damage and networks in operation

The use of new high-performance materials has always been a central element of technological innovation. Nevertheless, solids, materials and substances have so far been examined primarily from a physical and chemical history perspective. Social networks also play a central role in technical development. In particular, the direct interaction of employees and teams in larger development projects forms the informal structure. Finally, in order to be able to transfer the results from experiments with a simple experimental setup to complex real systems, specific methods of knowledge generation and transformation as well as knowledge transfer are required.

Make complexity in product development processes more manageable

The development and sale of complex products in a global environment also require efficient planning and implementation processes. Project plans and milestones have been established for this in project management. Here the project "Knowledge Dynamics" plans to develop a new approach that should make product, process and organizational complexity more manageable in product development processes. In addition, damage studies are the subject of the investigations. The failure of components often endangers human health and safety and can result in high economic damage. The causes are widely known, but damage occurs again and again.Is the knowledge available in the professional world not being used sufficiently? Is it available at all? To what extent can it be formalized? These are the questions that relate to this topic.

Examples from vehicle technology and university research

"We examine all these facets in the case studies," explains Dr. Sabine Ammon, the spokeswoman. “This includes, for example, the development of a braking system for commercial vehicle chassis. Here you can see very well to what extent simple test arrangements can be used to describe and evaluate complex real systems. Three test facilities and test benches should provide the relevant knowledge and calculation approaches for modeling the genesis of knowledge: a partial covering test bench, a hydraulic road simulator and a real vehicle."

Case studies also examine specific development environments from hardware and software and their influence on the knowledge dynamics in construction processes. They are not only significantly involved in the generation of knowledge, but also represent important tools in knowledge acquisition, knowledge coordination and knowledge integration, all key terms relating to the study of knowledge dynamics.

Effects of technology development on society and the environment

The core area of ​​the research is university research. The technical sciences as an independent scientific discipline - previously neglected in research - should thus be better located or made more visible in the science system. Dr. Sabine Ammon explains: “So far, engineering sciences have mainly been understood as an area in which knowledge from other disciplines, particularly the natural sciences, is applied; but not as an area that generates genuine knowledge. Our project wants to clear up with this cliché. In fact, the engineering sciences have diverse specific methods, procedures, and knowledge practices that we want to deal with.This makes the effects of technology development on society and the environment more understandable and controllable overall.”The focus is on research in the scientific field, but the transfer in industry and economy is also taken into account.
