Video: New Composite Material Enables Stable Lightweight Construction

Hicompelt is a composite material. A particularly high fiber volume fraction of up to 65% can be achieved by using low-viscosity cast polyamides PA 6C or the higher quality PA 12C lauamide as the matrix material. These two thermoplastics are used to infiltrate carbon fiber, glass fiber or mixed fabrics and produce them in a near net shape process close to the final shape. Metal elements such as bolts or metal parts can also be positively integrated during manufacture. This near-net-shape manufacturing is particularly interesting from a cost perspective: the process minimizes material and process costs.
Supplementary information on the subject of the lightweight construction user meeting in construction practice: getting fit for lightweight construction solutions
The 2nd user meeting for lightweight construction will take place on May 30 and 31, 2017 in Würzburg. Last year the basics of material, construction and manufacturing technology were conveyed, this year the event deepens the topics of material selection, topology optimization, additive manufacturing and composite materials. Lectures provide information about the latest developments in these areas and show best practice examples from lightweight construction. In additional practice forums, participants can deepen their knowledge and discuss specific questions. An exhibition complements the user meeting. The two-day event is aimed at product developers and designers in machine, plant, equipment and vehicle construction, whose task is to reduce the weight of components,so that energy and material can be saved or costs can be reduced.

Also suitable for large series
According to the manufacturer, the revolutionary thing about Hicompelt and the basis for the stability of the resulting components is also its new production form: In the so-called T-RTM process (thermoplastic resin transfer molding), the matrix material, a PA 6C or PA 12C, is initially just-in-time melted, introduced into the preformed scrim in still liquid form and then pressed to the respective component. After removal from the press, the component requires virtually no post-processing. With cycle times of only 3 minutes, large series can also be realized in just one tool.
Material for lightweight applications
Hicompelt is predestined for lightweight construction in the automotive and aerospace sectors and for all those fields of application where high component strength but the lowest possible component weight are desired. Hicompelt is already being tested as a replacement for metal components in a new generation of vehicles from a German automobile manufacturer. Due to the possibility of integrating metal components in a plastic-compatible manner, these composites can either be riveted to adjacent metal parts or welded. In addition, the Elteka engineers are currently working on solutions for even lighter structural components, including in aircraft.
Material can be repaired by welding
Unlike other composite components, Hicompelt can be repaired by welding. With this repair solution, it is not necessary to completely replace damaged parts. One should not neglect the later disposal of the components. Since the matrix is a thermoplastic, the plastic can be easily separated from the scrim by heating. (mz)
