The Pilz GmbH & Co. KG group of companies continued to grow in the past financial year: the automation company from Ostfildern near Stuttgart increased both its turnover to EUR 306 million and the number of employees to around 2,200 in 40 subsidiaries, the company reported. Pilz says it is currently investing around seven million euros at its headquarters in Ostfildern to expand research and development.

Ready for change

Pilz increased its sales to over 300 million euros for the first time in the 2016 financial year: it rose by 6.2 percent to 306 million euros. As of December 31, 2016, the company had 2,172 employees (+6.9 percent) in its subsidiaries in 40 countries worldwide. At the headquarters in Ostfildern, there were 1,025 employees at the end of 2016, including 38 trainees. In 2017, Pilz plans to create additional jobs in the group, particularly in the areas of customer support and development, the company announced.

Investment in research and development

The R&D quota was 19.8 percent based on sales in 2016. According to its own information, the automation company is currently investing 7 million euros in research and development at its headquarters in Ostfildern: after production has started in the new Peter Pilz production and logistics center the medium-sized company is converting the previous production area into a modern research and development center. After completion of the construction work, around 330 engineers will work on 7,300 square meters.

In 2016, Pilz increased its export share by 0.3 percentage points to 71.2 percent, the company said. In order to be able to grow internationally, Pilz is investing in the expansion of its sales and service network: With the opening of Pilz South East Asia in 2016, Pilz increased the number of its subsidiaries to 40. At the same time, the family-owned company wants to intensify local customer care by opening numerous locations in existing subsidiaries. "Digital business processes cannot replace customer contact," said the CEO.

Pilz generated around 75 percent of its sales in Europe in 2016, around 15 percent in Asia and just under 10 percent in America. In addition to the Asian countries, the subsidiaries with the greatest growth in 2016 also included the national companies in India, Brazil and also in southern Europe.

According to Pilz, Pilz defines itself as a solution provider for automation, with security being the core competence and part of every solution. Safe control technology continues to be the most important sales driver. However, the areas of sensor technology and drive technology would increasingly contribute to growth.

In 2016, the control technology and drive technology product area remained the most important sales driver at Pilz in absolute terms (66 percent), but meanwhile the sensor technology (15 percent) and services (13 percent) areas each make a significant double-digit contribution to sales. The range of services with advice, engineering and training has been a stable growth driver for years, according to the company. Safe robotics is of particular importance for further development: The increasing use of robots in the industrial environment is increasingly connected with the closest possible collaboration between man and machine. Pilz has been trying to establish itself as an expert in security in recent years;For example, the company supports German automobile manufacturers in the implementation of human-robot collaborations.

Captain leaves the ship

At the end of 2017, Renate Pilz, CEO, will say goodbye to her active role in the management and hand over to Pilz in the hands of her daughter Susanne Kunschert and her son Thomas Pilz. In 2018, she will hand over the “Market” division, for which Renate Pilz will be responsible until the end of 2017, to her daughter Susanne Kunschert.
