Video: Coupling Systems For Heavy-duty Applications With High Torque Requirements

Torques of 10,000 Nm and more can be found in countless applications, for example in metal-forming plants, mixing and kneading machines or centrifuges in the plastics industry. Regardless of whether they serve as a rigid shaft connection for aligned shafts, as compensating clutches are responsible for additional compensation for shaft misalignments or must provide reliable overload protection - a robust design and the safe transmission of these high torques is a must for heavy duty couplings. The inclusion of the mostly large shaft diameters should also be ensured. Depending on the requirements, different coupling systems are available.
Steel multi-plate clutches are valued for their robustness and high power density in heavy-duty applications. The torsionally rigid couplings work with plate packs consisting of several plates made of high-strength, rustproof stainless steel connected by steel bushings. The plate pack is mutually connected to the respective hub flange and the intermediate piece of the double-cardan version.
Balancing clutches
Orbit Antriebstechnik offers steel multi-plate clutches with nominal torques up to 65,000 Nm. Depending on the size, the couplings have 6 or 8-bolt plate packs, ie the shape of the plate pack is adapted exactly to the level of the respective torque requirement. They are available in single or double gimbal versions. In the double-cardanic version, depending on the coupling size, they offer displacement compensation of radial up to 2.4 mm, axial up to 7.7 mm, angular up to 1.3 °. Depending on their size, their torsional rigidity ranges up to 32,000 kNm / rad. Due to the static balancing of the G 6.3 balancing quality, the couplings are predestined for high speeds.
To bridge customer-specific shaft distances, they can be supplied as spacer shaft couplings with any length of intermediate sleeve. Form-fitting external or internal hubs - the latter for a reduced overall length - with bore diameters of up to 205 mm are available for shaft connection. Typical areas of application for steel plate clutches are, for example, printing and paper machines, conveyor systems, systems in metal processing, generators or turbine drives.
Rigid shaft connection
Rigid couplings are the ideal coupling solution for applications with precisely aligned shafts and high torque requirements. Shafts of the same diameter are connected non-positively and absolutely free of play. The coupling series is available for shaft diameters from 55 mm to 100 mm and can be mounted radially due to its two-part construction. For additional positive locking, the holes are designed with a groove. The heavy duty version is made of steel and additionally burnished.
As overload protection
Slip hubs work frictionally and slip in the event of an overload from a defined torque. Bias springs are used to preload the friction linings. The amount of this spring force and thus the amount of torque can be continuously adjusted using the adjusting nut or screw. The slip hubs hold the load, ie in the event of an overload, the respective transmission element slips and the torque is limited to the preset value. The hubs are available with adjustable torques up to 23,000 Nm. The slip hubs can be combined with pulleys, gears or sprockets. There is also a variant for extra wide transmission elements in the range of products. (ud)
