For some years now, Covestro has been developing tailor-made polymer materials for all common manufacturing processes in 3D printing. Thanks to their different properties, the filaments, powders and liquid raw materials are suitable for many industries and applications. At Fakuma 2018, the company is presenting a demonstrator for a shock absorber. What is special about the shock absorber is, in addition to its high functionality, the manufacture of the individual parts from three different products and with the help of three different manufacturing processes. The outer spring of the 40 cm x 7 cm part is made of powdered thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). It was brought into the desired shape layer by layer using selective laser sintering and is characterized by elasticity and high abrasion resistance. The set screw inside the shock absorber must have great strength and hardness. It was therefore made from filaments of the robust polycarbonate from Covestro. The fused filament fabrication (FFF) process was used. The air chamber inside is made of a liquid polyurethane resin. As in this case, the digital light processing method has proven itself for such components with filigree structures.
