A typical drive for table centrifuges are induction motors. Because their shaft bearings are the only wearing parts, this drive solution is almost maintenance-free. In addition, induction motors can be easily controlled by frequency converters. An alternative is the maintenance-free, very compact synchronous reluctance motors. They achieve high accelerations and are very efficient. However, special inverters are required for control in these drive models. Commutator motors, on the other hand, can be controlled easily and inexpensively. However, regular maintenance is essential due to brush wear. Therefore, these drives are rarely used today.

No matter which motor type the user chooses - the drive solution must meet the special requirements of the respective centrifuge. It is crucial that it reliably reaches the required speeds. In regular table centrifuge, these are entirely up to 26,000 min -1. However, the devices must not become too hot in order not to damage the sensitive samples. "That is why many centrifuges have active compressor cooling," explains Wolf Meyer, product manager at Groschopp Vertriebsgesellschaft. By individually designing the winding, which takes into account in particular the magnetic properties, efficiency and power factor of the motor and ambient temperatures, the motor heating can be reduced and at the same time energy consumption can be minimized.

Because benchtop centrifuges are designed with the smallest possible footprint, compact motors are in demand. When the motors are installed vertically, this means for the design: short with a large diameter instead of long and slim.

A laboratory is not a production hall - the motors should run quietly and with little vibration. This can be achieved, among other things, by a heavy, solid motor housing that only allows low natural vibrations. The material distribution - for example the design of the flanges - also plays a major role here. A low shaft deflection is also helpful. It is achieved by keeping the bearing clearance as small as possible. The experts from Groschopp guarantee increased concentricity, for example, through a defined balancing quality. A minimized residual unbalance ensures that the motor does not additionally excite the system. "All of these measures must be verified by measurements in the centrifuge," says Wolf Meyer. "This is the only way to optimize the motor for the respective centrifuge."
