DC has many potentials for the power supply of the future. The DC Industry 2 research project, which started at the beginning of October, examines exactly what a supply of direct current could look like, which specifically deals with the potential of direct current technology for industrial production plants

With 35 industrial partners, five research institutes and the ZVEI, the project is one of the largest collaborative research projects in Germany and is funded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs with 13 million euros.

In three years to an intelligent DC supply

The DC grid concept is to be expanded to an intelligent DC supply system by the end of 2022, which is suitable for supplying energy to a production hall or large-scale process plant at low cost.

In the previous project "DC Industry", which ran from 2016 to 2019, an extensive system concept was developed and tested on model systems . It is now to be expanded in the follow-up project for larger plants to factory buildings, with the aim of a safe, robust, highly available and network-friendly decentralized supply. This should also significantly reduce the cost of electricity.

The Institute for Energy Efficiency in Production (EEP) at the University of Stuttgart is developing an energy and network management for the sustainable operation of several DC micro networks and a framework for the stable, efficient and network-friendly operation of DC networks. The grid control optimizes the load flow between the locally integrated energy sources and the consumers. In this way, the DC grid can act externally as a reactive consumer in the energy market and optimize energy consumption economically. The medium-term goal of the EEP is the development of rules for a DC platform, the components of which can be selected and integrated as required and regardless of the manufacturer. The idea here is to establish a plug & play interface.

The focus of Fraunhofer IPA in the project is on the development of tools for commissioning and project planning of industrial DC networks. This should make the necessary planning and calculation tasks for the integration of a DC supply system accessible to a large group of customers.

Fraunhofer IPA and EEP will jointly validate the results in one of three transfer centers and test the sustainable and robust electrical supply to production there.
