Gerhard Sturm was born in Künzelsau-Nagelsberg on December 17, 1934, the third of five children. At the age of 14 he began training as a machine fitter in Esslingen. Then the classmate of Reinhold Würth and Albert Berner switched to the fan manufacturer Ziehl-Abegg. After passing the master craftsman examination, Sturm was appointed as operational assistant and in 1960 head of external rotor motor production. In 1963, Gerhard Sturm, together with his mentor Heinz Ziehl, founded today's EBM-Pope group, which he shaped over 50 years. Within five decades, Sturm has led Elektrobau Mulfingen (EBM) with 35 employees to the global company EBM-Papst.
Today, the EBM-Papst Group with over 15,000 employees worldwide is a manufacturer of fans and motors with an annual turnover of over 2 billion euros. Sturm withdrew from operations in 2007. Gerhard Sturm received numerous honors for his social commitment and his entrepreneurial activities. These include the Federal Cross of Merit, the Medal of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg and the Diesel Medal, the highest award for inventors.
