In order to clearly demonstrate the potential of digitalization and with the help of concrete examples to all small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Baden-Württemberg, the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO is mobilizing its research and bringing it directly to SMEs on site Application. The aim is to take the product development of small and medium-sized companies in the country to the next level . For this purpose, approaches of advanced systems engineering (ASE) are also made applicable for smaller companies
The focus is on:
- the digitalization of the product creation process and the product itself,
- the model-based networking of information,
- the networked and multidisciplinary development work and
- the use of artificial intelligence in product development.

Helping people help themselves
"With the help of ASE, companies can tackle the new challenges for the economy such as digitization, transformation to Industry 4.0 or the interdisciplinary and cross-company development of complex systems , " said Minister for Economic Affairs Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut on the occasion of the announcement of the funding project. The companies are to be introduced to the technology of the ASE in the first short pilot projects.
The ASE methods are made portable in a laboratory, SMEs are advised on site and instructed in the technology. The laboratory will be integrated into a mobile container, and can thus be operated by companies throughout Baden-Württemberg. "We don't just want to give an impulse what digital, continuous product development can do, but we want to support individual companies very specifically and individually with their entry into their application , " emphasizes Prof. Oliver Riedel, director of the Fraunhofer IAO. In order to provide this “help for self-help”, it is not just a matter of demonstrating application examples, but also of qualifying the employees on site and specifically deriving solutions in so-called exploring projects.
Smart engineering day
The digitization of production requires a rethink in product development. The Smart Engineering Day offers decision support for the selection of the most suitable methods for the conception, design and development of smart products and machines.

Interested SMEs can apply for Exploring Projects
The Exploring Projects give companies and start-ups in particular, which have so far not carried out any or few research and development projects, the chance to implement their project idea with the support of the expertise and research equipment at Fraunhofer IAO . The selection and design of the exploring projects follows a multi-stage process.
Interested companies can contact the Fraunhofer experts directly and request detailed information.
