ABB's new wireless smart sensor for hazardous areas monitors various parameters and provides information about the performance and condition of motors and pumps. This means that systems in difficult to access or dangerous areas can be monitored remotely. Advantage for the operator: he can plan his maintenance activities in advance. This reduces downtimes and increases the lifespan of the systems.
The new smart sensors are a further development of the existing product family and have undergone some technical upgrades.
Industry 4.0
Smart sensor enables cost-effective remote diagnosis of low-voltage motors
The sensor's battery life is up to three times longer than that of most comparable products. It is sealed for the entire service life (protection class IP66 / 67) and can be attached to the system in a few minutes with a simple bracket.
The sensor communicates with smartphones, tablets, PCs and system gateways and uses Bluetooth or wireless hard technologies for this. The range of the antenna was increased by a factor of three to four. This means that reliable communication is now possible even at a distance of a few 100 m (line of sight).
Another upgrade is the higher sensitivity of the sensors to minor changes in the system status. An early warning is given in the event of bearing damage. The sensors are able to generate a much larger data spectrum. They were also supplemented with integrated electronics that incorporated ABB's experience in electric motors.
The certification of the smart sensor for the hazardous areas ATEX, IECEx and NEC is almost complete, according to ABB. More are expected to follow later this year.
