Even if an electric drive has been correctly dimensioned according to the data on which it is based, problems can arise in later operation under unfavorable circumstances. In extreme cases, components have to be replaced and existing designs changed.
In order to avoid such problems, one must know the various causes that lead to these errors. If you are aware of them, the resulting problems can at best be avoided in advance.
When designing a drive, errors can occur if:
- the process is not adequately described,
- incorrect assumptions are made due to too many unknown sizes,
- Boundary conditions are not known,
- Reserve surcharges are set too high or too low,
- States deviating from normal operation are not taken into account,
- there is insufficient knowledge of the behavior of the components and their interactions.

At the user meeting on mechatronic drive technology, Reinhard Mansius highlighted typical errors in his lecture “Safely to the goal: avoiding errors in the drive design”, which can be caused both in advance and in the drive design itself. He is the author of the practical manual for drive design, in which the basics, tools and examples for the design of electrical drive systems are shown.
