But the problem is often: As soon as you have washed and disinfected your hands on the toilet, you attack door handles again, which could contain potential pathogens.

The Belgian 3D printing expert Materialize has now designed an attachment for door handles that can be manufactured with 3D printing and that makes it easy to open and close doors with the forearm. This way, no direct contact with the door handle is required. The company offers the printable design for free and is asking the global 3D printing community to print the door opener in 3D and make it available worldwide.

This is how the 3D printed door opener works

The 3D printed door opener can be attached to existing door handles. It has a paddle-shaped extension, with which the door can be opened and closed with the arm instead of the hand. If doors have to remain closed for security reasons, there is no manual contact when using the 3D-printed door opener. This can help slow the spread of the virus.

The installation takes place without drilling holes or replacing the existing door handle . The first model is designed for cylindrical handles. Materialize plans other designs as needed that can be made using different 3D printing processes.

The idea for the handle attachment came from an internal discussion about measures to protect employees and visitors. It quickly became clear that more people could benefit from this design, so it was decided to make the printable file available for free . Now anyone with access to a 3D printer can download the design and make it locally within a few hours .
