In order to curb the current corona pandemic as quickly as possible, a quick and reliable diagnosis is essential - but so far, COVID-19 tests have usually taken one to two days. Bosch has now developed a new COVID-19 rapid test that should enable diagnosis in less than 2.5 hours. The molecular diagnostic rapid test is used on the Vivalytic analyzer from Bosch Healthcare Solutions

Another advantage of the rapid test, according to Bosch, is that the test should be able to be carried out directly at the place of clinical treatment, which eliminates transport routes that take up a lot of time. Patients quickly gain certainty about their health and infected people can be identified and isolated immediately. In various laboratory tests with SARS-CoV2, the Bosch test delivered results with an accuracy of over 95 percent. The rapid test meets the quality standards of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The Bosch rapid test is one of the world's first fully automated molecular diagnostic tests that can be used directly by all medical facilities. In addition to COVID-19, another nine respiratory diseases such as influenza A and B can be examined simultaneously with the same sample.

So far, however, the test has not yet been approved, as the star found out on request. Bosch is confident that it will be able to offer the test in Germany from April. The costs of a test cartridge and the device are not yet known. Even according to Stern, the test cannot yet be used in the broad masses, here the capacities still have to be increased.

This is how the new quick test works

The sample is taken from a patient's nose or throat using a swab. The cartridge, which already contains all the reagents required for the test, is then inserted into the Vivalytic device for analysis. The medical staff can devote themselves to other tasks during the evaluation, for example the treatment of patients.

The handling of the analyzer should be designed so that it is user-friendly, so that not specially trained medical personnel can carry out the test evaluation. With one analyzer, up to ten tests can be performed within 24 hours. With 100 devices, up to 1,000 tests can be evaluated per day.
