The organizer Deutsche Messe AG announced that the Hannover Messe will not take place this year. It was originally planned to postpone it to July 13-17, 2020. Now the decision was made to drop the industrial fair entirely.
Jochen Köckler, CEO of Deutsche Messe AG
The reason is the increasingly critical situation due to the Covid 19 pandemic and an order to ban the Hanover region. Accordingly, the Hannover Messe may not be held in the planned period. In addition, the economy is also affected by the corona crisis, according to the fair. The manufacturing industry - core clientele of the Hannover Messe - is already struggling with the serious consequences of the pandemic. German industry is experiencing declining demand and sales. As a result, there are supply bottlenecks, production stops and short-time work. The next Hannover Messe will take place from April 12th to 16th, 2021.
On virtual paths against the corona crisis
In view of the latest developments relating to the corona virus, events are being canceled or postponed in a row. The future can belong to digital platforms that can compensate for this development. With the "Industrial Generation Network", the Vogel Communications Group presents a solution for professionals in the industry. As a digital supplement, the platform enables extensive networking: the focus is on digital encounters and establishing contacts, as well as product presentation and thematic exchange. Tools such as making appointments and video conferences enable professionals to network, make appointments and do research close to the respective branch. The platform thus replaces the currently severely restricted face-to-face communication, especially at trade fairs.

Digital offers as a replacement
Jochen Köckler, CEO of Deutsche Messe AG, explains: “Our exhibitors and partners, as well as the entire team, went out of their way to implement it. Today, however, we have to understand that it will not be possible to host the world's most important industrial fair this year."
It is the first time in the 73-year history of the fair that the event has not been organized. However, the event is not to be left out entirely: for the time until the next Hanover Fair in April 2021, it is intended to provide digital information and networking for exhibitors and visitors.
Various web-based formats are planned with which exhibitors and visitors can exchange information about challenges and technical solutions. Expert interviews, panel discussions are to be broadcast via live streams. In addition, the digital exhibitor and product search is to add new functions. Among other things, visitors and exhibitors can get in direct contact.

Direct contact cannot be replaced
"We are firmly convinced that direct contact from person to person cannot replace anything, and we are already looking forward to the time after Corona," says Köckler. But especially in times of crisis, flexibility and pragmatic action are required. As the world's most important industrial fair, the company wanted to offer orientation in the crisis and keep economic life going.
The VDMA regrets the cancellation, but reacts with understanding. VDMA general manager Thilo Brodtmann says: “The mechanical engineering industry must now concentrate on cushioning the consequences of the pandemic in their own factories before being able to start again. In April 2021, the machine builders will be back in full force in Hanover."
