Sometimes they arise because the lavender did not survive the winter, sometimes because the tulip bulbs were dug out after flowering: gaps in the bed are quite normal, and yet at least the gardening part of the population perceives a patch of bare earth as an invitation to take action. Well, after all, you can make the best of the bare soil and plant it with colorful flowers or crunchy vegetables. The variety of summer flowers that are in top form in just one season is so great that gaps in the bed need not be a cause for concern.

Some of these annual flowers also score with additional qualities: they loosen the soil and in this way prepare it well for subsequent plants. Some vegetables also look good and serve excellently as a gap filler. Summer flowers are particularly useful if the gaps in the border are a little larger or an entire bed is created. In this case, uncomplicated species such as marigold, bee lover or annual linseed are recommended. They serve as an inexpensive interim solution until the planning for the bed is completed and perennials and shrubs are planted in autumn. If you place summer flowers between perennial plants and prefer it to be noble than colorful, you should make sure that the flower colors of the annuals harmonize with those of the existing plants. Of course, blue and white flowers always fit, but the same also applies in the garden: what is allowed is allowed and some purists are surprised at the sight of a cosmos, how stunningly beautiful the combination of yellow and pink can look.

create a flower bed

A colorful flowering bed in the garden doesn't have to be a dream, as these 10 tips show

Sow summer flowers directly from May

Starting in May, you can forego preferring annual flowers on the windowsill and sowing them directly outside. This saves time and money and is particularly recommended for summer flower species that are not part of the snail's favorite dish, such as cosmeen.

Particularly tasty species such as student or sunflowers should be protected from snails or preferred in a pot. So that the tender seedlings get good starting conditions, the soil should be raked as crumbly as possible and kept moist with a gentle shower spray. After flowering, some annual summer flowers form seed heads that adorn the garden until the end of the season. It looks good and is practical. This way these annuals can sow themselves and become guests for more than one summer. If you prefer to determine yourself where the flowers will bloom next year, just cut off the flowering.

planting bag flower bed

Tall garden garbage bags can be turned into a real eye-catcher …

If you want to make the earth invisible right away, buy early plants. Snapdragons, lobelia and vegetable seedlings are often offered cheaply by the gardener and in good quality at the weekly market. For the mostly north-facing and therefore shady front gardens, the hard-working Lieschen is ideal, in white a touch more noble than the pink variants and conjures up bright light reflections in shady areas. No matter which plant you choose: when buying, make sure that the pot is well rooted and provide the soil with a portion of compost or organic fertilizer again. Then the plants grow to splendid specimens in just one summer and quickly make bare spots in the bed forgotten.
