The dahlia once had the reputation of being a somewhat old-fashioned plant. Now she is experiencing her second spring and is enjoying great popularity again. The plant dahlia you should not until May, so until the permanent frost-free spring. Then it blooms from June until autumn. If your dahlia is already blooming in the bed, you should always remove the faded as soon as possible - this gives the plant more power to produce new flowers.
The plants from Mexico and Guatemala get along best with a nutrient-rich, well-drained soil, but above all they need one thing: lots of sun. When the tubers are planted in late April / early May, organic fertilizers (e.g. horn shavings) are added to the soil. Around five weeks later you can add some blue grain. With this double application of fertilizer, you should leave it at that, advises Dirk Panzer, who runs a horticultural company in Bad Köstritz. If the dahlias get too much nitrogenous fertilizer, powdery mildew can form on them.

However, the situation is different for dahlias that are planted in a flower pot or balcony box: You should fertilize them about every five weeks, as the active ingredients are rinsed out by constant watering. Incidentally, compact, low-growing varieties with a height of 20 to 50 centimeters and smaller flowers are best suited for pots. If you have high-growing dahlias in the garden, these can reach up to 150 centimeters, should they be supported during the growth phase to withstand strong winds and downpours. In addition, you do not have to water the dahlias in the garden, as they can normally absorb enough liquid through the morning dew.

Planting dahlia
Dahlia bulbs are sensitive to frost, but little frost in the ground won't harm them. The best time to plant is April. If you put dahlias in groups, they will appear particularly full later. The bulbs reproduce well in loose, nutritious garden soil. The flower is satisfied with little space in the bed. Nevertheless, you should expect a little sun and little wind. However, the queen of autumn does not like waterlogging and should be avoided urgently.
This is how dahlias come about in winter
If your dahlias have already been planted and the first night frosts start in autumn, the aerial parts of the dahlia will die and the bulbs must be removed from the ground. Then remove any coarse earth residue and cut the stems back to about five centimeters. Let the tubers dry in a frost-free room for a few days. Before storing them, check the tubers: if they are rotten or damaged, they should belong on the compost.

Hibernate gardening dahlias
Dig in in spring and dig up again in autumn: this is the only way to overwinter dahlias
Wooden crates are suitable for wintering, in which the tubers are stored airily. A dark, dry cellar room is ideal as a winter quarters, with temperatures around 5 ° C, so that the dahlias can grow well again in April when planted out.

Lovers of the colorful dahlias can often marvel at several hundred varieties at once in numerous plant shows across Germany: With a bed area of around 2,400 m2 and about 12,000 dahlias, the dahlia garden on the flower island of Mainau is probably the best known. More than 270 varieties offer visitors to Lake Constance a unique play of colors. The oldest, still existing dahlia garden in Europe is located in Hamburg's Altona district and shows wonderful rarities on a 1.5 hectare site. The Dahlia Park in the Palatinate Lustadt is smaller, but designed in the form of a labyrinth. And in Bad Köstritz in Thuringia, a big dahlia festival is celebrated every year, at which the dahlia queen is chosen. There is also a dahlia museum in the village.
