What are photo frames for photos, are Beeteinfassungen for beds. This not only limits the beds, but also creates a clear - and decorative - cut to the rest of the garden. The simple variant between lawn and bed is the lawn edge. But if you want it to be a little clearer and structured, you can use a bed frame made of stones.
Old bricks for beddingare very decorative and quickly installed yourself: The edging made of old bricks only needs a small mortar bed made of lean concrete, which prevents the stones from tipping over. When designing the border, you can use strict geometry - as in our example - or lay the clinker bricks as a standing runner at an angle of 10-15 °. This creates a bezel with a varied jagged crown. While concrete blocks appear gray and cold in the garden and are only integrated into the system by plants, clinker or brick look decorative immediately after installation. The reddish to brown clay bricks are not only suitable as pavement, but also as a border for beds. Old bricks from demolition houses are completely sufficient for this. These are often available free of charge from the construction site or from building rubbish dumps for self-collectors. Sometimes bricks also arise when renovating your own house.
Build bed border from palisades

Concrete palisades are also a good and permanent solution for edging the garden beds. With their rough edges, the palisades "Germania antique" have a very natural appearance. This bed border also fits perfectly to already paved driveways or garden paths. In our example, rolled concrete palisades with the dimensions 14 x 21 x 63 cm are used at a price of around 15 euros each. The stones are available in two colors, rolled or hand-cut and in five different heights between 28 and 120 cm. When planning, you have to take into account that later a third of the palisade height literally sinks into the ground. If the stones are not installed deep enough, there is a risk that they will not withstand the pressure of the soil later and simply tip over.
- Concrete palisades should always be laid in the concrete bed. Depending on the height of the palisade, a correspondingly deep trench is dug - 40-50 cm in the example -, filled with gravel and compacted. This is followed by concrete mixed in a 1: 4 mixing ratio. The stones find the necessary support in the bed prepared in this way.
- It is important to place the first palisade exactly vertically. If it is wrong, this affects all subsequent ones! You should always check the status even during work. When setting, it is advisable to fill concrete on the right and left again and again.
- When all palisades are fixed, the entire border of the bed is carefully sprinkled with water so that the concrete solidifies. Allow concrete to harden for three to four days!
- If the paved areas of the garden path or driveway are directly adjacent to the border, these will be paved before the bed is filled. When creating the discounts, make sure that there is a drainage layer (gravel, expanded clay).
Wicker fence as a border

The cottage garden as we know it today is a relatively young concept of horticultural art. Up until the 20th century, the arable land for the farmers' self-sufficiency was not necessarily at the farmer's house, but was simply a small area on his farm, which served to grow vegetables and fruit (as a trellis and fence at the same time). The exposed location in the open field made effective wind protection necessary: useful shrub hedges and cheap wicker fences made from willow branches did an excellent job! It was only later that the cottage garden became a "romantic" gardener's place.
