We built the coffee table set from 18 mm thick glued wood. The alternative would be 40 x 20 mm plane strips. This would have advantages, but also disadvantages: Although these strips saved cutting on the circular saw, they are considerably more susceptible to the typical wooden bends and twists, which you would have to prevent with additional spacers glued in between in order to achieve the elegantly strict effect of the parallel strips preserve.
Instructions: Build your own coffee table
Two differently complex construction principles are also possible. We'll show you both: at the bench, we glued cross-pieces and table legs alternately at right angles, with the stool the cross-pieces and legs were mitred to length and connected with dowel spacers.
If you do not have a table saw, do the cutting with the hand-held circular saw. Put them in a machine table, because you need a reasonably reasonable stop. The table used by us can be set to 45 ° according to the scale, but this can only be used as an approximation and does not save several trial cuts until the exact setting for the miter is found. To ensure that all drill holes are positioned exactly the same, clamp a drilling jig in an angular shape on the drill stand so that the drill always hits the center of the miter seam. The two outer parts only receive blind holes, the rest are drilled through.
Just as important: Each dowel must sit in the middle of the spacer. Make a drive-in aid with a blind hole that positions the dowel there as desired. After you have three table parts, connect them to the stool with glue and clamps. Of course, you can also build the bank like this. However, it is also easier, as you can see in the pictures below. With this construction, the glue surfaces are sufficient to ensure stable connections without dowels. However, this makes the furniture a little less delicate and refined.
