It was certainly not easy when Prince Franz Joseph zu Salm Reifferscheidt dragged on a gold leather wallpaper from the 18th century in 1937 and mounted it on the wall in the east wing of Schloss Dyck. And fitting is also the right word here, because with a modern non-woven wallpaper the calf, goat or sheepskin wallpaper covered with a silver leaf layer had little in common.

Non-woven wallpapers consist of a smooth and tear-resistant fiber material (cellulose, textile fibers) instead of heavily coated leather. They are dimensionally stable so that they do not contract or expand.

With non-woven wallpaper, the usual soft times are eliminated: they are simply placed dry in the paste bed. This makes it particularly easy to wallpaper the ceiling, because you don't have to fiddle with the heavy, pasted wallpaper over your head. Instead, you cut the strips, spread the paste on the ceiling or wall with a tassel or roller, and put the wallpaper directly on. It is advisable to apply the paste thoroughly so that you can align the wallpaper strip in peace. Too little paste is absorbed by the wallpaper or sets quickly - a correction of the inserted web is then no longer possible.

Non-woven wallpapers in all variations

The trade offers white and colored non-woven wallpapers. The latter can also be painted over if necessary, but initially offer the advantage of not having to do this. Especially when you want a Mediterranean look with wiping effects, you can save a lot of time with finished wallpaper. Apart from that, it may be difficult for some to achieve as good a result with paint and coating tools as a pre-decorated wallpaper. Whether painted over in white or fully decorated, the structures of non-woven wallpapers are so diverse that only a glance at a manufacturer's sample folder brings clarity.

Attaching a non-woven wallpaper is not difficult, but if it has a pattern, it looks different

In our case, two simple types of wallpaper from Erfurt were selected: a non-woven fiber for the wall and a non-woven textured fiber for the ceiling. The latter cannot be distinguished from the conventional woodchip with the naked eye. Nevertheless, it is a non-woven wallpaper with all the processing advantages. It is understandable that more and more customers are choosing these practical wall coverings, especially those who want to wallpaper themselves - non-woven wallpapers are just easier to process than other types of wallpaper.

Important: The surface must be smooth for wallpapering

Before you stick the non-woven wallpaper, there are usually a few problems to be solved: the old wallpaper is reluctant to come off, the plaster may come down, or the previous resident had stuck around 3 mm thick polystyrene panels to the ceiling (which, incidentally, from the point of view of sound - and heat protection is relatively ineffective). You can only remove such a ceiling covering by hand, either with the help of an electric scraper or with a spatula.

Important: remnants that remain on the ceiling must be sanded off! The surface has to be smooth, otherwise the bumps push through the wallpaper and you get the impression that there are lots of air bubbles - not a nice result. The same applies to plaster damage or existing drill holes that appear under the old wallpaper: they have to be repaired and smoothed with a repair spatula.

Old wallpaper can be removed relatively easily if you put a few spritzes of dishwashing liquid in a bucket of water and use it to wet the wall. Wallpaper removers are also excellent and can often be added to the water in a lower dose than stated on the package. Here you can only try it out and add more if necessary.

Of course, water and steam penetrate the wallpaper better if you perforate it beforehand. There are tools available that all look similar, but have different names from the providers: spiked roller, nail roller, wallpaper hedgehog, wallpaper grinder, wallpaper tiger - no, it looks a little different: A wallpaper tiger has three rotating perforating heads with self-sharpening wheels.
