Video: Wood Preservation. Silicate-based Wood Paint

After more than 20 years of development, the mineral paint specialist Keim presented a novelty in wood coating: a wood paint based on silicate. Susanne Sachsenmaier-Wahl Never before has ecologically conscious building been in such high demand. No wonder that the building material wood is experiencing a renaissance in connection with this trend. But even if the naturalness is very important, very few builders agree with the visual change of untreated wood on their structures. The majority of the wooden components are therefore coated. But the joy of coated wood often doesn't last long. The paint peels off or shows cracks, the look is anything but appealing, and the wood protection is gone.
Extremely long service life
So far, silicate paints have only been used on mineral substrates. Here these colors have an extremely long lifespan. Keim, a specialist in silicate paints, has researched and developed intensively for around 20 years to make the advantages of silicate paint usable for wooden substrates. At the beginning of the year - for the first time in January at the BAU in Munich, then in March at the FARBE in Cologne - the result could finally be presented to the skilled trades. The new silicate paint system for wooden substrates includes a special base coat and a top coat. The long oil base coating penetrates well into the wood and bonds firmly to the surface. When reworking with the silicate top coat, the silicate fine fillers contained in the primer react with the top coat, creating a permanent bond. The result is a paint system that is open to diffusion and has a high level of moisture and UV protection. Like all silicate paints, the new development is extremely stable in color and lightfast.
Easy processing
The silicate wood preservative paint is suitable for coating dimensionally stable and dimensionally stable wooden components. In general, all stable substrates are suitable, including wooden components that were previously coated with a conventional wood preservative paint. If necessary, however, these have to be worked back to the stable surface. The application can be done either with a brush or roller or rationally with the airless device. Generally, two undiluted top coats are required after the primer. Alternatively, a glazing top coat can be used instead of the second top coat. A special glaze belonging to the system, which can also be thinned depending on the desired glaze effect, is available from Keim. Since the silicate wood preservative paint does not form a film, the renovation is easy. But Keim doesn't even want to think about the renovation. The paint manufacturer affirmed that the first test objects that were coated with the paint 17 years ago did not have to be renovated. And thanks to the color stability and the lightfastness of the material, these objects have not lost any of their former aesthetics. And here, too, the wood-silicate paint differs from most conventional wood coatings. While organically based products initially shine, the silicate material captivates from the start with a noble velvet matt look. After 20 years, the benefits of silicate paint have finally been transferred to wood. The paint manufacturer assured that those coated with the paint 17 years ago did not have to be renovated.
