Video: Gripped Next To It

Someone is always at fault. Someone must have wanted it that way. Someone is thought to be responsible. We are talking about facade designs in which one is puzzled and does not really know whether this is already the end result or just a preliminary stage. Marc Nagel Germany is committed to color, a trend that has not only been evident in clothing and interiors in recent years. The facades of our new housing developments, streets and inner cities are also moving away from the gray, uniform porridge. But if you walk through the streets with your eyes open, it becomes obvious that there are not only good examples. Because not every building that has been boldly and confidently put in a new and bright dress seems to be well designed. What these mistakes look like, that shows a walk through the state capital Stuttgart. A small selection of representative examples is intended to show what it doesn't have to look like if you are committed to color. It starts with a new building. One of the largest hospital complexes in Baden-Württemberg is currently being built in Stuttgart city center. With an eye clinic, surgery, heart center, ear, nose and throat area, children's clinic or gynecological clinic, a modern health center should be available to patients. One of the new buildings is currently under construction on the edge of the site, where a nursing home used to stand and which defined the image using the architectural means of the 1970s. But what arises there on Sattlerstrasse raises questions. Architecturally quite successful, the building shows with its facade, that someone here has shown no sensitivity to colors. A change of closed facade parts and glazed elements creates a nice overall picture, but since the closed elements are neon green, a negative aftertaste remains. Because dressed like this, the building looks like it pays homage to the 1980s, when neon colors were absolutely modern. Of course, the benevolent viewer will now say there is a reason for this design. After all, green is a fashion color and at least with the shade used here you stand out. And here you are at the crucial point: must a building stand out or should it blend harmoniously into its surroundings? Especially when, as in the case of the Catherine Hospital, the neighbors are almost all residential buildings, who don't want to shine into the city with natural stone facades and muted colors. And: does a building have to participate in fashion when it comes to colors? Or shouldn't it be timeless, because hopefully it won't be repainted every two years. Questions that can be asked of this building. But enough scolding, let's change location and consider another example. A few months ago, a commercial building with a parking garage was redesigned with the Clipper House on Heilbronner Strasse. However, the fact that the color orange was chosen, right on one of the most important main streets in downtown Stuttgart, also suggests. Here too the motto seems to have been: attract attention at all costs. Because this is evident not only in the exterior facade of this building, but also on the advertising message that has been hanging for months, which indicates the existing vacant office space. "The 11th commandment: Come to our office." Exaggerated like the exterior color. The orange does not give this house any appeal or even a hint of extravagance, but looks more like a provisional or the temporary project of a color artist who likes to experiment. The other examples show that an exaggerated color scheme is not the privilege of the city center or commercial buildings. First, a recently renovated apartment block on Nagoldstrasse in Stuttgart-Münster. He shows in a confined space that not all colors can be easily combined with each other and raises the question of why this was not noticed in advance. Because,The fact that the person responsible for the design actually knows something about his work can be seen from the other houses belonging to this building ensemble. Here the color combinations are well chosen and elegantly resolved. It is not clear why this combination of lime green and slightly apricot-embossed red was used only on this house. But it is also shown a few streets away that sensitivity in the choice of colors does not have to be a matter of course. Because in the residential building on Mainstrasse, the gray color field that marks the entrance doesn't really want to match the yellow paint. And the red borders of the windows and the heels are bothersome and not harmonious. Maybe you wanted to pick up the colors of the Württemberg flag waving in front of the house: black roof, yellow house, red frames and gray fields like the gray of the flagpole. The highlight is another house on the same street. Here someone seems to have gotten the color blue out of his head when designing. And because you couldn't make up your mind, you chose two extremes: a light, almost pale blue and a strong royal blue that would look great on any fountain pen. Above all, a closer look at the house raises doubts whether it has been forgotten to paint the bay window with the light tone or whether it has been forgotten to provide the rest of the house with the strong hue. Because unfortunately the two shades of blue do not want to match. But enough bleating and complaining. Because this selection is of course the condensed result ofwhat you encounter on an attentive walk through towns and cities. But it is by no means representative of all facades, since the majority of the buildings naturally have matching colors, harmonious combinations and well-chosen shades. After all, painters, architects, the paint studios of the paint manufacturers and even most builders know what is possible, what stands out and what is close to the disruption of public space. And in these cases of skilful color design, the question asked at the outset is not who is to blame for the color selection. Because with well-done facades, it was always the builder or at least the architect who did it right. While everyone knows who is to be shown with failed designs, whether cause or only executive body. Color is not only confined to interiors and fashion. The facades are also moving away from the gray uniform porridge. However, there are also insensitive color combinations. Because not every building that has been put on a bright dress seems to be thoughtfully designed. A walk through Stuttgart shows exactly how these mistakes are made.
