Early and with expert help, the Schmid painter's workshop in Nürtingen planned the handover to the next generation.
You can't get more harmony. Exactly this impression is given to everyone who is allowed to sit in a group of managers at the Schmid painter's workshop in Nürtingen-Ober-ensingen. Such a “general assembly” includes the “seniors” Monika and Rudi Schmid, their son Andreas with his wife Patricia and the employed master painter Marion Tichy, who is right in the middle in terms of age and so sometimes the bridge between the older and the young generation of entrepreneurs can beat.
So everything seems to have gone like a textbook when the company was handed over to the young generation, without friction, without jerking and crunching? Nearly! Because: the junior, Andreas Schmid, initially had other plans. He thought about going to the police and going about his professional career there. But things turned out differently, as Rudi Schmid explains: "We had already prepared that there would not be a fourth generation in our company," said Rudi Schmid. “After Andreas worked for a friend of his painting company for a few weeks, we didn't recognize him. He was thrilled, but also because my colleague Burkhardt does a lot of scaffolding in Weilheim.”That was exactly what Andreas Schmid did:“The operation was more technically oriented - I enjoyed it. And so the scaffolding became a "hobby" of mine. Before that, I didn't really like the painting profession - I just don't like the creative.”So it was only logical that he should continue to march towards technology during his apprenticeship. After completing his painting apprenticeship, he studied at Biberach University of Applied Sciences and graduated with a bachelor's degree. He wrote his bachelor's thesis on "Calculation in medium-sized craft businesses". Conveniently, he had good and transparent figures in his parents' company and was able to incorporate a lot of them into his thesis. Even before his bachelor's thesis, it was clear to Andreas Schmid that his trade wasn't easy on the market: "The painter has a bit of a problem that he only comes at the end of the money for the construction work …". His father, Rudi Schmid, always had a soft spot for technology. He is a painter with body and soul, but he also went on to study chemistry, paints and varnishes, which he completed as an engineer. It was always clear to him that he wanted to work with modern tools and machines in his company. His wife, Monika Schmid, who, after her time at Deutsche Bank as a classic entrepreneur, covered the entire office area, was also always open to innovations: “We bought a computer in 1980, which was very early for a painting company. Right from the start, we saved all of our customers' measurements.”With the generation change, the software also has to be changed, says Andreas Schmid:"We are currently comparing different software packages and we already have a favorite."
Since entering the company, Andreas Schmid's goal has been to expand the company's range of services: “It was important to me to pay more attention to the scaffolding and drywall area. Before, it was more the case that both areas were involved when an order with a different focus was required. "Rudi Schmid sees the development very positively:" Since Andreas has been driving this forward, we have been able to carry out technically more demanding work, for example, qualified scaffolding, or Fire Prevention."
The creative master painters Patricia Schmid and Marion Tichy ensure that not only the rational, the technical get enough space. Rudi Schmid is happy: “It fits perfectly that Patricia is creative and likes to take care of great painting techniques. The same applies to Marion, who can also cover this area. I myself was never the "artist". And Marion came to us as an ideal addition in this area around 20 years ago. "The two women do not get into each other, on the contrary, as Patricia Schmid emphasizes:" We recently brought together a great glaze technique with ornament - that was fun.”Marion Tichy agrees:“It worked perfectly, we were happy to tackle this task together. By the way, Patricia not only brought herebut also give new impulses to the company as a whole."
Are there trends and future plans at the Schmid painter's workshop with a view of the market? “At the moment, our main thing is to solve their mold problems for customers. That has increased incredibly, mold without end, so to speak”. Monika Schmid reports. "Our son Andreas is therefore also working on a new product, a fleece that can be heated with 24 volts and does not even allow mold to form at critical points." Here too, more and more technology, physics, construction Biology, also construction chemistry - the absolute strength of the Schmid junior.
Of course, it is inevitable that the boys will also reorient themselves and weight differently with the materials they process and thus with the suppliers. For example, they recently put a new Caparol mixing system in the warehouse. The responsible sales consultant Simon Ramlow was pleased that this coincided with the 30th birthday of Caparol's top product Indeko-plus (see page 10, article "Careful change").
In the future, cooperation with other companies with which the Schmids founded the cooperation model "The Complete Renovators" should be intensified, everyone agrees. "This is going very well and has proven itself for us," says Rudi Schmid. And Monika Schmid adds: “We can absolutely recommend each of the colleagues from other trades. With such a cooperation, it has to be human. And that fits perfectly at the moment."
Last year, the 100th anniversary of the Schmid painter's workshop was celebrated, which was acknowledged on both sides in the Nürtingen and Wendlinger newspapers. In the article "Colored Services" Rudi Schmid gave a story from the past at its best: "When my grandfather founded the company, he still drove to the customers with a handcart and mixed his colors himself from ingredients such as lime, oil or ox blood." Whether it was other extraordinary stories? "More than enough," said Rudi Schmid. "For example, my grandfather was also a dance teacher in the cold season." Monika Schmid recalls a story from the recent past: "During the war times in ex-Yugoslavia, we had an apprentice who brought big cars there on weekends. Sometimes he didn't come on Mondays because he was too tired. But on a few weekends he earned more than we did in a month.”
With all this experience accumulated with Monika and Rudi Schmid and with the fresh ideas of the young generation, the course was set for a smooth transition. And yet the Schmids recommend getting external help. Monika Schmid sees it this way: “Only with the tax advisor can things go wrong or become difficult. I contacted an advisor from the BWHT, Baden-Württembergischer Handwerkstag, early on. We got important tips.”Rudi Schmid emphasizes that everything has to fit:“After we agreed in the family, we had the contract drawn up by the tax advisor. It was then checked by a lawyer and a management consultant. In the end, the notary had a little change - only then was everything perfect.”Andreas Schmid adds:“The consultant also swore to us that it can't work without the bank and that plans are drawn up together with it. We did that too. And so everything went smoothly."
