Universities and master schools presented the results of their cooperation project on the subject of facades for the first time at FAF 2016.

For over a semester, architecture students and master students have dealt with issues relating to the integration of components and connections as well as the fastening technology for facades. "In addition to qualitative aspects, an important focus was also the further development of the building shell from a design point of view," said Prof. Dr. Ing. Karin Lehmann from Bochum University of Applied Sciences. Together with the Arnsberg master school, the participants have developed future-oriented solutions for facade design based on the tradition of the craft.

At Hanf-Haus, a project of the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, the focus was on "fast and inexpensive construction". Together with the vocational school for plasterers Heilbronn, Marietta Scheider has developed a modular and expandable plug-in system made of hemp insulation boards. The result was an imposing “building” that received a lot of attention and - further developed - is recommended for temporary buildings. “The surfaces,” says Mario Appel from the Heilbronn Vocational School, “can even be clad with clay plates or with clay or traditionally with lime cement plaster.”

The students of Prof. Harald Roser, Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences, developed suggestions for the three-dimensional design of ETICS facades with the Leonberg vocational training center. Caparol supports the project technically and financially. Out of tradition and conviction, the company has relied on a partnership and trusting cooperation with the craft for decades. Managing Director Guido Kuphal sees potential to implement sophisticated design and function on facades on an equal footing. There is creativity here that Caparol likes to promote. This and the very good contacts to universities and master schools were crucial to support the cooperation project technically and financially. Kuphal: “The facade is changing and the requirements are becoming more diverse. In order to take this into account in terms of design and function in thermal insulation, we supported and helped to design the 'Design meets function' project.”

Franz Xaver Neuer, who is responsible for the project at Caparol as technical manager, works with Caparol Color Design Studio director Margit Vollmert and Oliver Berg (facade insulation technology) to advise and assist the project teams. Donations of material complete the support. The exhibits now shown form the basis of the teams to further develop initial ideas. The goal is to develop practically implementable systems by the next FAF 2019 in Cologne. In the process, additional partners are to be gained, for example, to integrate light into the facade in terms of design and functionality.

For Rainer König, Chairman of the Federal Association for Finishing and Facade, the exciting thing about this project is that completely new approaches emerge when theory and practice come together. He sees a win for both sides. Students are familiarized with building practice at an early stage, master students can contribute their experiences in dialogue with the students to the planning. Reason enough to actively support such ambitious projects.
