DAW SE wins at the GreenTec Awards with the concept "camelina instead of petroleum". "Sustainable wood finishing products based on camelina" is the title of the project with which the DAW won at the GreenTec Awards 2018 in the "Construction & Living" category. The cultivation of flax yolk strengthens biodiversity and offers significant advantages for the ecosystem. That also convinced the jury. The DAW was recently awarded a top 3 place in the German Sustainability Award for its activities in this area. "With the camelina project, too, quality and ecology have been successfully combined, thus providing handicrafts with high-quality products for customers who want to act sustainably and in a way that conserves resources," says Caparol brand manager Wolfgang Hoffmann: "It is for Caparol Another Step,to expand the range in terms of renewable raw materials."

The Federal Ministry for the Environment is funding the Federal Environment Protection Program until 2022 to support the DAW project, which farmers want to encourage to switch from pea monoculture to mixed fruit cultivation and to build the necessary sustainable value chain. It is supervised by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN). Starting from 80 hectares of mixed fruit cultivation in the first project year, the area is to be increased from year to year. The goal is to expand cultivation to 1,000 hectares by 2022 and to involve at least 40 farms. “To stop the decline in species in the agricultural landscape, we need changes over a large area. This also includes cultivation methods such as mixed fruit cultivation,”said the former Federal Minister for the Environment, Barbara Hendricks.

"Mixed fruit cultivation therefore goes hand in hand with a nature-friendly cultivation method that also strengthens biodiversity in agriculture," added BfN President Prof. Beate Jessel: "In addition, the camelina oil obtained in the project can replace less sustainable raw materials in the paint industry in the long term, if the farms and the manufacturing companies make a profit. By choosing sustainable products, consumers are influencing the cultivation method and promoting biodiversity in the field.”In the end, the products are glazes, wood oils and varnishes that are made from camelina oil produced in Germany. With farmersRepresentatives of the ministries and chambers of agriculture, as well as end consumers, are also involved in a social dialogue in order to provide information about the manufacturing process and the environmentally compatible products it produces.
