Video: Linseed Oil Paints - Perfect For Non-dimensional Components Made Of Wood

If wooden components are allowed to deform under the influence of moisture or temperature, one speaks of "components that are not true to size". Wooden cladding, garden fences but also half-timbering are part of it. The coating materials for such dimensionally incorrect components must therefore have the highest possible elasticity.
Linseed oil paints are extremely elastic. They have ideal properties for historical wooden components that are not true to size. Linseed oil varnish, which is obtained from linseed, serves as a binder for linseed oil paints. Even today painters or restorers mix linseed oil paints themselves. This is very time consuming, especially when the object requires different shades of color.
To make life easier for craftsmen and restorers, Caparol developed the Histolith linseed oil paints. The material is highly weatherproof. Because of its high elasticity, it is very well suited for timber framing and timber cladding. Many historical colors are available for use in monument preservation.
Processing of linseed oil paints
Because of their relatively slow drying, linseed oil paints should be applied thinly. Otherwise the color tends to wrinkle.
Steps for different substrates:
- Prime raw oak with Histolith half-oil
- Prime raw softwood with Capalac wood impregnation primer
- Remove old layers that are not stable
- Sand or leach stable old oil or alkyd resin paints
- Remove existing acrylic paints.
- Closing wood cracks
- Primer, intermediate and top coat with Histolith linseed oil paint.
The drying time between the individual work steps is at least 24 hours.
Water-bearing cracks in the wood
When renovating half-timbered buildings, water-bearing wooden cracks must be closed. Traditionally, this is done by chipping with dry, wooden strips of the same type. Commercial joint sealants or acrylic fillers are not suitable for this.
Caparol has introduced the Histolith Sanopas wood tear paste especially for sealing wood cracks and flaws. It is a linseed oil-bound paste with natural fillers and fibers, which is characterized by particularly high flank adhesion and great elasticity. After curing, the material has wood-like properties.
