Marble and stone imitations are gaining in importance again given the trend towards luxury. The painter's sheet presents four marble paintings step by step. Episode 2: Nero Marquina Susanne Sachsenmaier-Wahl Actually, the Nero Marquina is not a marble, but a deep black limestone with white calcite veins. As the name suggests, the Nero Marquina comes from Spain. In order to bring out the characteristic deep black of the Nero Marquina in an impressive way, dab dark red, diluted filler with a natural sponge onto the prepared surface. Why then red, when we want black, some people will ask themselves now. The red “fires up” the subsequent black, intensifies it and makes it appear more profound. The red filler is dabbed on because the sponge marks later appear in the black filler layer as stone-like structures. Then finally, what should be black turns black: the red surface is not only coated once, but even twice with black filler so that no red spots remain visible. Cardboard as a template Now the big white veins have to be painted. Anyone who has already pulled out the brush was a bit too hasty: for the coarse veins you only need a piece of cardboard with a torn edge. With the help of this torn edge, white filler is now stamped on the black surface in such a way that the veins cross or overlap again and again. It is important that the veins do not work evenly. Because even with the original stone, the veins are sometimes stronger, sometimes less pronounced and in no way evenly distributed. As soon as the veins are dry, the entire area is covered with a black coat. Then it is time for an intermediate sanding, because the painted stone should look smooth and shiny later. The next step also requires a surface without edges and scoring. Finally painting is allowed. With the pointed brush, the previously stamped veins are drawn. This makes them look more distinctive. In addition, the finest veins can be drawn with the pointed brush. But please don't fall for the “vein craze”, but always keep one sentence in mind: less is sometimes more. As soon as you are satisfied with your result, the sandpaper has to be run again. Since as little as possible, instead, the surface should be as smooth as possible, first choose a grain size of 600 and rework with 1200-grit sandpaper. Finally, the dedusted surface is covered with a spatula wax and polished to any gloss. The Nero Marquina comes into its own when combined with white Carrara marble. In the first episode of this series, we presented how this can be painted (Malerblatt 7/2011, page 56/57).
