Video: ROOF TILES COATING. Roof coating, an alternative to the replacement of roof tiles. 2023, December

The roof coating offers the painter lucrative additional sales areas. Older, unsightly roofs can be refreshed with relatively little effort and manageable costs. The customer benefits in two ways: one and the contracting painter can carry out the roof renovation as part of the facade renovation.

The dirty, algae facade is to be given a new coat of paint. The scaffolding is in place. Of course, the painter also offers the customer an overhaul of the eaves as part of the facade renovation. The downpipes are checked and, if necessary, painted or replaced. Most of the time, the painter even checks the gutter and may provide it with a sealing coat of paint. The house is refreshed all around. Almost - because the roof, whether at home or garage, is usually left out. It was also getting old. The surface has become porous due to the weather, algae, moss and lichen have formed. In the worst case, there are even small imperfections, for example caused by hail. A new covering is expensive, therefore you postpone the roof renovation as long as possible. A complete renovation is often not necessary, because the roof still serves its purpose perfectly. Only the look has suffered - and this is particularly striking in addition to the freshly painted facade. So why not offer the customer an overhaul of the roof? Yes, you read that right: the roof also benefits from a coat of paint. And who would be better suited for this than the painter? The roof also benefits from a coat of paint. Roof tile colors

Roof coatings are offered in the roof tile colors common for Germany. The color palette ranges from the typical red tones to brown and anthracite. Some manufacturers also offer special colors (eg “Delta Roofcoat” from Dörken). The glossy, satin gloss or satin matt coatings can be diluted with water, have a low odor and are therefore relatively easy to use, and the tools used can also be cleaned with water.

Liability guaranteed

The binder base for roof coatings is in most cases a pure acrylate. This not only ensures that the paint adheres to numerous substrates. Pure acrylate paints are also extremely weather-resistant, they are considered to be rainproof, excellent water repellent and offer a high level of protection against aggressive air pollutants. Their high elasticity also makes them tolerant of large temperature fluctuations, which are quite common on the roof. This elasticity is retained even at low temperatures. Film preservation with which some roof paints are equipped can reduce the algae infestation (eg "Delta Roofcoat" from Dörken, "Disboroof 408 Roof Paint" from Disbon, "Roof Paint" from the southwest). The functional color can be equipped with a fungicidal additive at locations facing north or in a green area. Similar to a facade color, it is adapted to the special requirements of the object. However, one should inform the customer, both when using a film-preserved roof paint and when using a fungicidal additive, that the water collected from the roof surfaces is only used as irrigation water or for filling ponds after a longer waiting period (at least 1 year) may be. Preparation for roof coating

Roof coatings can be used on clay tiles, concrete roof tiles, fiber cement panels. Some of the products on the market can also be used to coat gutters and roof accessories made of hard PVC or non-ferrous metals.

Before coating, the roof surfaces must be cleaned thoroughly and freed from algae and moss growth. It is best to use a pressure washer for this. It is important that water jets are always used in the direction of the drain to prevent excessive moisture penetration into the roof structure.

With a permanently elastic, fiber-reinforced sealing compound (eg "Jungkeit Waterproof 620" from Jaeger), any existing damaged joints, cracks and holes in the entire roof area, such as. B. on chimneys, drain pipes, skylights, skylights, gutters, etc., to be repaired. With this spreadable sealing compound, imperfections can be bridged up to one centimeter.

Strongly absorbent substrates such as corrugated roof panels made of fiber cement or strongly chalking concrete roof tiles should be solidified with a primer before the top coat (eg "Aqua Dachgrundierung 619" from Jaeger, "wikulac FH 20" from Südwest). Some manufacturers recommend the use of an adhesion promoter (eg "EP-Uniprimer 481" from Disbon) on engobed and glazed clay tiles.

Coating

Generally, roof coatings have been developed for old, weathered roofs. Newer roof tiles and clay tiles have partially refined surfaces that are intended to repel dirt and self-cleaning and that can lead to liability problems. In these cases, sample areas should be created before coating. Concrete roof tiles and clay tiles should be moistened before coating. This prevents the paint from drying too quickly and consequently prevents film formation. Ideally, the first coating takes place immediately after cleaning. As a rule, roof coatings have to be applied in two layers. Some manufacturers also recommend priming with dilute roof paint on highly absorbent, porous substrates (such as concrete roof tiles). Since the coatings usually dry very quickly, two operations can be carried out on the same day. Rollers, brushes or airless sprayers are suitable as application methods, although the latter is certainly the most economical for larger roof areas.

In addition to house roofs, there are also many other roof areas for coating: Car roofs and garages, garden houses and commercial buildings also receive reliable protection and a fresh look thanks to a roof coating. Which roof coating is suitable for which application should be clarified directly with the coating material manufacturer in individual cases.

The following manufacturers offer systems for roof coating:

  • Disbon Disboroof 408
  • Dörken Delta Roofcoat
  • Jaeger roof renovation system
  • Pufas roof and plinth color
