Steel itself is not combustible, but the functionality of steel profiles in the event of a fire can decrease if the critical temperature is reached. Depending on the type and load of the components, this is approx. 500 - 750 ° C.

In order to counteract the negative effects of a fire, the planner must create a fire protection concept that is specially tailored to the use. Structural systems are to be arranged, erected, modified and maintained in such a way that the occurrence of a fire and the spread of fire and smoke are prevented, and in the event of a fire it is possible to save people and animals as well as effective extinguishing work.

Insulating fire protection coatings protect steel profiles in the event of a fire by extending the time until the critical temperature is reached. Depending on the profile size, type of profile (open or closed), installation situation and order quantities, times of 30 to 90 minutes can be achieved. In the event of a fire, the intumescent foam foams from a temperature of around 120 to 200 ° C with a large increase in volume and forms a solid, fine-pored carbon foam. Due to its very low thermal conductivity, the foam insulates the component so that it heats up more slowly.

Fire protection coatings for steel profiles are always carried out in a system consisting of a primer for black steel or galvanized surfaces, an insulating layer and a top coating. The top coating is used for the color design and the protection of the insulating layer against moisture and mechanical influences. Products, quantities and procedures are laid down in the relevant general building inspectorate approval (AbZ), the approval in individual cases (ZiE) or the European technical approval (ETA).

The application of the coating system may only be carried out by certified companies by trained, competent personnel. After completion of all work, the coater confirms in a so-called "installer certificate" that the system has been applied in accordance with the approval. To ensure fire safety and to maintain the fire protection concept, the owner is obliged to inspect or have the coated components, which are usually marked with stickers or fire protection plans, at regular intervals by visual inspection. Damage from the size of a 2 euro coin should be corrected immediately and professionally. When making repairs, make sure that the product that matches the system is selected. With zero flame metal insulation 3060, Zero-Lack offers such a fire protection system for steel profiles on the inside.
