With modern facade profiles, thermally insulated facades can also be designed plastically. The processing is relatively simple and the costs remain manageable. Sabine Bady, Baumit In the past, aesthetics and pomp could often be used wastefully. Historic buildings with their rich decorations attest to this. Today, the client faces new challenges. Traditional handicrafts on a large scale can hardly be paid due to high labor costs. In addition, only a few specialists are still able to carry them out. The creative freedom when decorating facades is also increasingly restricted by external factors such as environmental protection, energy consumption and consequently also by the factor of building insulation. With modern facade profiles, however, it is possible to decorate insulated building facades - be it to adapt a building to its original look or to create a completely new facade structure. Imitation in original look Modern facade profiles made of extruded polystyrene (EPS), such as "Silhouette" from Baumit, get an extremely hard surface thanks to a special plastic layer. The additionally used quartz sand on the surface gives the profile a deceptively real stone look and a natural-looking feel. Compared to handcrafted facade profiles, modern facade profiles made of plastic offer several advantages. Particularly noteworthy are the high weather resistance and moisture resistance, their elastic surface, which contributes decisively to the avoidance of cracks, the low thermal conductivity as well as its simple and much faster processing. Modern facade profiles offer a wide variety of profile types. In addition, many manufacturers offer the option of an individual profile design based on CAD drawings. Regardless of the type of substrate, it must be stable, solid, dry, clean and level before starting the laying work. Old coatings in the area of the adhesive strands to be applied must be removed in order to ensure optimal adhesion properties. Furthermore, it has to be taken into account that in the case of new plastering or post-plastering, these surfaces must be floated and washed before applying the profiles. In the area of the thermal insulation composite system, it is important to notethat the fabric filler has to harden and is not primed. Processing To cut the profiles it is recommended to use a suitable tool, such as a foxtail with a miter box. A pasty, acrylic-based dispersion adhesive is used to glue the profiles to the prepared surface. Before processing, this 30 percent Portland cement is added. The mixed adhesive is applied using a notched trowel to the back of the profile and to the previously marked area on the surface. After the profile has been precisely fixed to the substrate, the excess adhesive must be removed. The joints between the individual profiles are closed either with PU foam or with assembly adhesive. The procedure depends on the size of the profile (note the projection size). This means that only assembly adhesive can be used to process joints and miter cuts on small profiles (throat depth less than seven centimeters). On the other hand, PU foam is used for large profiles with a projection of over seven centimeters. This is first filled into the six to eight millimeter wide joints. The joint is then cut out in a wedge shape, also filled with assembly adhesive and smoothed with a spatula. Finally, the adhesive is generally sprinkled with quartz sand in order to achieve a uniform surface appearance. In the case of large overhang sizes of the profiles, it should be noted that, depending on the surface, they must also be fixed with impact anchors or threaded rods. To put the finishing touches on the design, the facade profiles can then be painted in the desired color. However, only facade paints based on pure acrylate should be used here.

Baumit offers an extensive range of modern facade profiles under the name "Silhouette". The profiles consist of an EPS core with a surface made of a special plastic layer. Scattered quartz sand creates a natural stone look. Further information on the profiles and their processing is available from Baumit Tel.: (08324) 921-0 / Fax: -483 www.baumit.com
