At the Baumit Life Challenge 2018, prizes were awarded in a total of seven facade categories. An international jury of 13 leading architects selected the six category winners and the main winner of this year's Baumit Life Challenge. Spain won the main prize again after 2014, Germany won in the "Historic Renovation" category. The Life Challenge 2018 was themed "Structure meets design".
The awards were presented in the categories single-family home, apartment building, non-residential construction, thermal renovation and historical renovation, as well as in the special category "structure meets design". The jury chose the Spanish project “Collective Housing and Health Center” by the architect team of Bonell i Gil & Peris + Toral to be the overall winner in 2018. Germany was strongly represented with five nominations and was delighted to win the facade renovation with the Paulaner brewery, Munich.

“We launched the Baumit Life Challenge 2014 for the first time in Europe to present the countless, creative possibilities that are available when designing facade surfaces and structures. The growing international interest among architects, investors and fabricators in this award - we already had 325 project submissions this year - has confirmed that we are putting out the Baumit Life Challenge every two years, "says Robert Schmid, Managing Director of Baumit Beteiligungen GmbH about a glamorous evening "in which Europe's construction industry celebrated the winners".
The competition for the European facade 2018
In the competition for the European facade of 2018, significantly more objects were submitted for evaluation than in previous years, exactly 325 objects. At the end of March, the competition entered the decisive phase: the top facades for the shortlist were determined by a top-class jury of experts via online voting. This shortlist consisted of the six best facades in each of the five categories and the special price. The 36 nominees (architects, builders and construction companies) were invited to the Life Challenge Award ceremony on June 14, 2018 in the capital of the Life Challenge winner 2016.
