Video: Coat Efficiently

Part 2: The proven airless technology stands for perfect and fast surface coating. With professional surface coating, spray technology has established itself as a reliable and particularly economical process. Airless technology is the most widely used machine technology. Due to the consequent further development towards low-fog spraying, Airless now also offers a quick and, above all, economical alternative to the paint roller indoors. In the case of airless (airless) atomization, in contrast to air atomization, the material is atomized solely via the material pressure, i.e. without air. An electric, pneumatic or petrol-operated pump pressurizes the material and presses a defined amount of material up to 25 megapascals through a nozzle bore. There the material is divided into a spray jet and atomized. The combination of the right pump, the right material and the right nozzle is crucial for a perfect result. Airless is particularly suitable for the application of dispersions and interior fillers, but this spraying method is also often used for painting work. The manufacturers of airless devices offer different pump technologies for optimal adaptation to different needs. In the case of diaphragm pumps, the material is conveyed via the stroke movement of the diaphragm. Devices with this technology can be used very flexibly and at the same time are easy to use construction site devices. In contrast to diaphragm pumps, the material of piston pumps is conveyed by the stroke movement of the piston. This offers high suction power, which is particularly advantageous for highly viscous materials. Piston pumps that are operated pneumatically are explosion-proof and therefore also suitable for use in the workshop. A common prejudice against airless technology is that the application is explanatory and complex. By following a few tips and tricks, this can be extremely simplified and spraying becomes a cost-saving alternative to traditional application. Correct posture Correct handling of the airless gun is crucial for a perfect surface. When spraying, there should always be a uniform distance of about 25 to 30 centimeters between the nozzle and the surface. The gun is held at an angle of 90 degrees to the surface and the spraying motion is carried out with the entire arm,to achieve a uniform layer thickness. It is important that the trigger of the pistol is only activated after the arm movement has started. Spray tracks should also overlap by 30 percent in order to achieve an even application of paint. When painting or applying dispersion paints, first the edge areas such as corners and edges and then large areas are sprayed (if necessary in a cloister). Spray pressure and viscosity For a good result, the spray jet must be even. Before starting the application, it is best to carry out a spray test on a box. If streaks appear in the spray jet, the spray pressure is too low or the viscosity of the coating material is too high. So either the pressure has to be increased or the coating material has to be diluted. In order to ensure the optimum ratio of pump, nozzle and material, Wagner has tested a large part of the common materials and makes specific recommendations for the correct setting of the device and the nozzle size. Filter and gun At the beginning of the spraying process, the user should check the gun filter. If this is already used up, it is important to use a new filter. Care must be taken to insert the appropriate filter for the nozzle into the gun. Most manufacturers recommend the right filter for every nozzle size - some also offer practical combination packs with nozzle and filter. If the nozzle is briefly blocked during spraying, modern nozzles can be sprayed freely by simply turning it briefly by 180 degrees and pulling the trigger. If you turn the nozzle back, the blockage is removed and work can be continued quickly and easily. For cleaning after use, nozzles can be placed in a special cleaning solution to free them of material residues. When purchasing an airless device, it is worthwhile to count the time saved in the surface coating and thus the labor cost savings and the purchase price. Since the device is ideally fully utilized and therefore a lot of working hours are used, particular attention should be paid to quality and durability when purchasing, and the technical equipment of the machine should be optimally tailored to the individual needs of the company. Wagner also offers an extensive product range in the field of airless technologies. For example, the SuperFinish 23 Plus diaphragm pump, which, thanks to its variable material intake (5 liter upper container), is also suitable for processing small quantities. Continuous pressure regulation, simple maintenance and quick cleaning are further advantages. The HeavyCoat series is particularly powerful for hydraulic piston pumps and is also suitable for heavy materials such as spatulas or thick coatings. Due to the high delivery volume and the high pressure, long hose lengths are also possible. The modern nozzles such as the TradeTip 3 or the 2 SpeedTip are innovative. If such a nozzle becomes blocked during spraying, turn it briefly by 180 degrees and pull the trigger. After turning back you can continue working. The information for the correct device settings and nozzle sizes of the tested materials from different manufacturers are listed in the Wagner Spray Guide and can be viewed on the Internet: www.wagner-group.de
