Heart Made Of Glass: Non-flammable Plaster Base For Outside And Inside

An important requirement for modern building materials today is environmental friendliness. The non-combustible Sto carrier board consists of 88 percent by volume of recycled waste glass and is suitable as a plaster carrier board on the facade and in the interior. Despite its low weight, it has a high load capacity.

"The Sto carrier plate is made of recycled glass, which cannot be incorporated in the usual recycling process," explains Dr. Eike Messow, Head of Sustainability at Sto. "We not only have a product made of 88 percent glass by volume, we are also a problem solver for the recycling of used glass." In a multi-stage production process, a company in the Sto Group with 25 years of experience in this field wins expanded glass spheres in different sizes up to around ten millimeters. They are extremely light, free of broken grains, heat and sound absorbing, pressure-stable, acid-resistant, non-combustible and are pressed together with hard-wearing fiberglass reinforcement fabric to render plaster base boards.

The board, available in formats up to 2400 x 1200 x 20 mm, is non-flammable, frost-proof and permeable to diffusion. It has a low thermal and hygric expansion, which means that it hardly expands even with increasing heat or moisture. This makes it ideal for use on the facade and in the interior. With a bulk density of only around 500 kilograms per cubic meter, it weighs up to 65 percent less than cement-bound plaster base boards. This simplifies assembly and minimizes processing errors. Nevertheless, the Sto carrier plate has a high load capacity. So it is also suitable as a carrier of ceramic cladding or clinker brick.

The panels are butt-jointed, offset, cut with a cutter or saw. Optionally, there is the plate, which is usually fixed on metal or wooden surfaces with stainless steel screws, also with prefabricated recesses for dowelling. It can even compensate for unsustainable substrates and prepare them for a safe wall structure. The plate can also be used when processing StoTherm systems; For example, if a blind apron is to be manufactured and installed in the insulation level. On the outside, the panels also have full-surface fabric reinforcement.
